Synopsis

Invincible Iron Man #56 synopsis by T Vernon
Rating: 3.5 stars
Tony Stark has revealed his identity as Iron Man to the world! So, he and his girlfriend Rumiko Fujikawa are talking about it on a city street as he explains that the secret doesn’t matter anymore. Tony comes to the aid of an old lady being mugged and she doesn’t appreciate the help. Rumiko explains that her affair with Tiberius Stone (issue #37) was just a ploy to make Tony angry and she regrets it. She also explains that her grandfather is returning 49% of the stock holdings in Stark Enterprises to him while keeping 49% for himself; Rumiko, holding the remaining 2%, gives it to Tony as a farewell present but he won’t let her go and they kiss….

The other big news is that Viastone, Tiberius Stone’s company, has teamed with NASA to have the Space Shuttle deploy his new communications satellite in orbit. But something goes horribly wrong, the Shuttle’s jets misfire, killing two astronauts and sending the satellite in a spiral toward Earth….

Tony and Rumiko are ambushed by the media and dash inside his building to be met by Pepper Potts, filling him in on urgent messages he’s missed; Friday has picked up secret communications on the imminent disaster and informs Tony….

A US military jet has intercepted the plummeting satellite and fires rockets which miss their target. The pilot heads to plan B: crashing the satellite in a suicide move—but suddenly Iron Man is on the scene to take his place, exploding the wreck and riding back to Earth on the jet….

Tony returns to his apartment to find Rumiko waiting for him in the hot tub but he must first recharge his artificial heart. Returning to the tub he finds it is now Pepper in the tub, his one true love—but Tony is still hooked up to the machine….

Review / Commentaries

Invincible Iron Man #56 Review by (December 11, 2020)
Comments: Title comes from a song by the Rolling Stones. Cover colors by Angelo Tsang and Udon.

Review: It claims to be about Tony’s secret identity and a near-disaster averted by Iron Man but we know the truth: the issue is about Tony Stark’s love life. The soap opera continues, with the usual dance with Rumiko being either violently for him or violently against him. And then there’s this latest twist with Tony thinking he’s been in love with Pepper all his life, which seems pretty absurd. It’s rather silly but at least we have an exciting near-disaster to distract us from the character bits!
