Story Name:

In Shining Iron: Part 2

Synopsis

Invincible Iron Man #60 synopsis by Russell Brisson
Rating: 4 stars
Pepper Potts is shaken by Dr Ellen Mallory’s discovery of the Iron Man helmet (with a skull inside) unearthed from a millennium ago, wondering if it signifies that Tony Stark is dead….

A millennium ago: Tony Stark is prisoner of Aislinn the sorceress, handed over to her consort Emile to be tortured until he reveals the secrets of his armor….

Friday can’t locate Happy Hogan (who is in a bar) and Pepper wants to go find Tony but Dr. Mallory volunteers to go in her stead, as she would be more familiar with that time and place, thus better able to rescue Tony. The machine sends her back….

Tony is in the dungeon with Sir Brann, the knight he fought last issue, who was charged with bringing the King’s new sword back from the smithy and has now lost it to Aislinn. The two iron out their differences and Brann is able to snag Tony’s gauntlets across the room with a cord and, after some adjustments to the polarization, dons them and rips the doors off their cells. Iron Man and Brann overpower some guards and in the courtyard they see Dr. Mallory suddenly appear. Then Mallory and Aislinn merge into a single person, after having been split for a millennium, and all of the power of the Earth Goddess is restored to her. Shellhead and Brann recover the King’s sword and fight their way out of the castle and away. They take shelter in a cave but Aislinn spies them via her magic crystal and dispatches a dragon to deal with them….

Review / Commentaries

Invincible Iron Man #60 Review by (January 16, 2021)
Comments: Title is a play on the phrase “a knight in shining armor.” Friday appears as Spider-Man.

Review: Again, the time travel to the Middle Ages to fight a Morgan Le Fay knock-off is pretty familiar stuff but it’s stuff fairly well handled by Mike Grell, Even his usual chunky style isn’t a distraction. And Sir Brann is an interesting character, surprising Tony with his resigned view of life and desirous of dying in battle rather than of illness when he is old. A jolly and wry fellow this Sir Brann.
