Synopsis

Journey Into Mystery #651 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars
Late one night while all Asgard sleeps, Heimdall’s Hel-hound Hati nags to go out. The dog heads over to the house of Volstagg where he awakens Hildy who takes him out for a walk. Hati scents something and rushes through the words until they come upon two dwarfs trying to remove the magic leash Gleipnir from the sleeping Fenris Wolf. Hati awakens the wolf and there is a fight; Hildy rushes home to warn her father but Volstagg, up for a snack, doesn’t really listen to what she’s saying—until she mentions Fenris. Volstagg awakens Fandral, they rouse Hogun, everyone calls on Thor (and Sif, who wasn’t supposed to be with him). The Aesir question the dwarfs who explain that they were trying to remove Gleipnir, correct the enchantment, and replace it. Seems they were missing one of the magic ingredients: the breath of a fish. Fenris invades the All-Mother’s garden and the heroes engage him in battle. Meanwhile, Hati leads Hildy and Volstagg to the hiding place of Gleipnir at the base of the Tree of Idunn. The fight with the giant wolf reaches a stalemate; they ask Fenris what he wants to go away. He responds that he wants one of the Apples of Idunn so that he can desecrate one small corner of Asgard—and he wants the little girl to bring it to him. So Hildy does—using a bit of sleight of hand to swap it out at the last minute for a regular apple. Everyone returns to their beds.

Review / Commentaries

Journey Into Mystery #651 Review by (March 31, 2014)
Review: A rare beast: a comic story that focuses on Hildy, Volstagg’s daughter. That’s why this title is so much fun; it can toss us a goofy curve ball like this one every once in a while. Kathryn Immonen does a fine job here; too bad this comic didn’t sell very well, it’s much better than Thor at this point.

Comments: Title comes from the famous collection of children’s poems by Robert Louis Stevenson.
