Defining Moments

Synopsis

Thor #601 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

The exiled Thor sits in a wilderness contemplating the broken Mjolnir; from limbo Don Blake is worried that the loss of the magic hammer will leave him trapped. Thor strikes the hammer on the ground and the transformation succeeds, albeit painfully. Don gathers up the broken pieces of his stick and heads to town….

Meanwhile, Balder and Loki attend a dinner at Doctor Doom’s castle, where the supervillain offers the Asgardians a place of refuge similar to their former home with guarantees of freedom and friendship. Balder is suspicious of Doom’s offer but silky-tongued Loki persuades him that the two monarchies have more in common that it might appear at first….

After Volstagg spends quite a bit of time drunkenly (and comically) bemoaning Thor’s fate, Fandral and Hogun suggest that the Warriors Three follow their leader into exile….

In Broxton, Bill Junior receives a visit at the diner from the Lady Kelda, who tells him of her imminent departure and she confesses her love for him but can’t ask him to sacrifice his home for her….

As Don sits in his room, repairing the broken stick with masking tape, he receives a vision of Loki, come to inform him that the Aesir are now departing for their new home in Latveria but actually to drop a bombshell on him: Loki claims to have just discovered that the female body he inhabits is that of the missing Lady Sif and that her human host is on the point of death, so Thor had better hurry up and find her so he can say goodbye….

Late that night, Bill comes to a decision, he drives out to Asgard, climbs into the levitating city, and joins Kelda in the transporter with a sincere, "I love you…"

Review / Commentaries

Thor #601 Review by (October 1, 2012)
Review: The story would have been better titled, “New Plot Threads introduced” seeing as how we have: Thor in exile, the Warriors Three ready to join him, the Aesir leave Asgard to move in with Doctor Doom, Mjolnir is broken, Sif is uncovered, and Bill and Kelda get together. Highlights: the amusing interplay between Don and Thor, something we almost never saw in the 1960s and the romance of Bill and Kelda. Only debit: the scowling pointy-nosed Doom does not look right.

Comments: The first time Thor’s hammer was broken was in JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #118; the Destroyer (in his first appearance) did the deed that time. Today’s revelation: Doctor Doom uses Wikipedia.
