Synopsis

Captain America (1968 series) #209 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars

Captain America and Donna Maria have fallen into the clutches of mad biochemist Arnim Zola. Zola summons Doughboy, a balloon-like blob of flesh that descends from the sky, and the creature seizes them with its tentacles and draws them into its body. Zola hops on as well and the creature takes off into the air, reconfiguring itself in flight into an actual spaceship….

In the hospital, the SHIELD field director approaches the recovering Sharon Carter and assigns her to locate the missing Cap and Falcon along with the other abducted agents. He shows her File 116, containing all the information on grotesque monster sightings and she accepts the assignment, much to Leila’s dismay….

In the mountains, Falcon investigates the giant nest he has discovered and pursues a shadowy figure he spies there; the quarry causes an avalanche, sending a hail of boulders down on the winged hero….

The streamlined Doughboy in the shape of a flying saucer carries Cap, Donna Maria, and Arnim Zola through the skies at supersonic speeds. On the way Zola fills his prisoners in on his background: he was a biochemist who discovered a box of ancient secrets and became the first genetic engineer, creating and manipulating life in the laboratory. Eventually he transferred his own mind into a specially constructed and enhanced body and continued his weird experiments. When Cap attacks his captor, Zola causes a huge muscular figure, Primus, to emerge from the Doughboy walls and do battle with the hero. With his increased density, Primus is able to withstand Cap’s blows and knocks out the hero with a single punch. He then claims Donna Maria as his prize….

Review / Commentaries

Captain America (1968 series) #209 Review by (August 23, 2010)
Review: Probably the best of the 70s Kirby Cap storylines, his off-the-wall imagination and dynamic art aren’t thrown off by absurd writing.

Comments: Part two of a five-part story. First (full) appearance of Arnim Zola. Classic Kirby line: “I’m going to do what SHIELD expects of me—but not before I’ve had a new hair-do.”
