Showdown Day!

Synopsis

Captain America (1968 series) #210 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars

Captain America leaps to his feet and resumes his attack on Primus, rescuing Donna Maria from the clutches of the artificial man. When she tries to seize the control device from Arnim Zola, the villain causes the floor of the organic crafts to liquefy, trapping her and Cap in its gooey fibers. The ship arrives at its destination, a castle in Europe, and descends for a landing, using its tentacles to deposit Cap and Maria in a sealed room in a tower. Primus insists he deserves better from Zola, being more human, but his creator will not hear of it. In the prison chamber, Cap discovers that the room seems to be organic as well, and suddenly, the shadows begin to move….

In the mountains, Falcon dodges the rocks of the avalanche caused by his unseen foe, and comes face-to-face with a huge manlike bird, many times his size….

Back in the States, SHIELD has assigned Sharon Carter to investigate the disappearance of several agents, including Cap and the Falcon, and the sightings of giant monsters from File 116. Her specific assignment is to track down the genetic engineer responsible. Her one lead: Cyrus Fenton, a wealthy and unstable recluse, who may be the financial backer of the mad monster maker….

Arnim Zola outlines his plans to mutate Cap and Maria. Primus balks at the thought of the beautiful woman being disfigured by the mad scientist and rebels. Zola uses his controller to force his reluctant servant to merge again with Doughboy, while Primus vows to return for revenge. Zola then converts Doughboy into two monsters to patrol the castle grounds. Zola then conjures an organic telescreen and contacts his benefactor: the Red Skull! When the Skull learns Captain America is Zola’s prisoner, he is intrigued—just then an alarm warns the Red Skull he has a visitor. Signing off, he dons a disguise and answers the door. It is Sharon Carter, unaware that her host, Cyrus Fenton, is the Red Skull….

Review / Commentaries

Captain America (1968 series) #210 Review by (August 23, 2010)
Review: Probably the best of the 70s Kirby Cap storylines, his off-the-wall imagination and dynamic art isn’t thrown off by absurd writing.

Comments: Part three of a five-part story.
