Captain America (2012 series) #9

Review: What the--? Cap’s only been in “Dimension Z” for a half-hour? Ohhh, they’d better have a good explanation for how he grew a beard, not to mention the fact that the events of the last two issues have lasted longer than that. How much of what we’ve read has been fake? Did Zola really implant Cap with false memories of kidnapping the baby and raising Ian for years? At what point did it end? Did the kid ever exist? And how could Marvel have the gall to end this drawn-out ten-part series by saying “It was all a dream!”? This overshadows all the other problems of the story such as Jet Black’s unlikely rejection of her entire value system in five minutes (does she really exist too?) and why we are supposed to feel sorry for the death of Kirby’s cartoonish villain. I wanted to like this new darker—and more sci-fi—take on Cap but they really worked against me at every point.
