Immortal Hulk #24 Review by (October 2, 2019)

Review: Ghastly issue features a hideous battle scene, the end (twice) of the Fortean Abomination, and a new direction for the series. And Galactus and the FF have cameos for some reason. It’s also a nice showcase for artist Joe Bennett and the inkers (sounds like a 40s jazz band) who are emulating the art of EC Comics giant “Ghastly” Graham Ingels. And we have a reminder that Brian Banner is in Hell, waiting for Bruce and any other visitors his way….

Comments: Belardino Brabo, Marc Deering, and Roberto Poggi are also credited with the inking. Even though they are on the scene, the members of Gamma Flight do not appear.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Immortal Hulk #24 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

The issue begins with flashbacks to the origins of Galactus, Fantastic Four, and Hulk, and then moves on to Hulk, badly burned by the Abomination’s caustic vomit, facing General Fortean and his troops; Fortean assumes the Hulk is stupid but the big green guy uses chunks of his poisonous skin as weapons against the troops and clobbers Fortean….

Watching from a lab nearby, Dr. McGowan explains to Rick Jones, Jackie McGee, and Red Harpy that Fortean formed his staff out of people who were disgraced in the public eye and gave them back their lives and she can’t betray him…

…and then the Fortean Abomination spews acid at Hulk again and accidentally sprays two of his own men. They die horribly and Fortean tosses it off as a necessary thing. This leads McGowan to declare over the loudspeaker that she is relieving the monstrous Fortean of his command and taking over. She orders all personnel to stand down. The rapidly decaying Hulk crushes his foe’s head…

Fortean finds himself in Hell with Brian Banner, a depowered Doc Samson, and Bruce Banner. He is shocked, moreso when Bruce reveals himself to be Joe Fixit who snaps Fortean’s neck….

Back at the base, the healing Hulk cleans up the last soldier and announces his intention to take over Shadow Base, if he can get McGowan on his side., and use it a the base for his mission. A revenant Doc Samson insists on staying with them to keep an eye on Hulk, who tells him, “Relax…Everything’s gonna turn out fine”….

Epilogue: Eons from now, at the end of all things, the Sentience of the Cosmos finds Bruce Banner, the last survivor; Sentience explains to Bruce that they will become a new life form and pass into the Ninth Cosmos. Banner, looking like the undead, stands on an asteroid with the corpse of Mr. Immortal, whom he has killed just like Franklin Richards who was intended to be the last survivor. Bruce then morphs into a twisted combination of Hulk and Banner and seizes the Sentience and bites him in two….
