Hulk is Hulk

Synopsis

Immortal Hulk #32 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

Xemnu the Living Hulk is the world’s mightiest hero: everyone loves him and remembers seeing him on television when they were kids and this is part of Dario Agger’s plot. Xemnu’s hypnosis has captivated the world and when Agger is done with it, Xemnu will take over and convert any remaining humans to what he is. Xemnu is hungry so Agger offers him his henchman Travers….

Meanwhile, the news reports that the green monster which has been sighted is actually the terrorist Robert Banner who intends to end the world; Xemnu has always managed to save the day. Or so everyone seems to remember, including Jackie McGee who has known Hulk/Banner. At Shadow Base, Bruce Banner has managed to hold the Hulk in a huge mirror; Rick Jones wants to know if he’s alright and Bruce, insisting his name is Robert says he’s fine. Charlene McGowan speaks to Doc Samson, having worked out that Xemnu has hypnotized everyone into remembering a TV show that never existed, forcing its narrative into everyone’s heads—and as a trans person she is opposed to that. However, she raises the question of who would be susceptible to this…like Bruce Banner? “Robert” Banner now thinks he is the terrorist Roxxon is claiming he is and he has now trapped Hulk in a mirror, which he has broken….

Hulk, trapped in the mirror, wants out as he is one of the few who understands what Xemnu is doing but he’s helpless. But he has someone else on his side: the Green Scar…his self from Planet Hulk….

Immortal Hulk #32 Review by (March 11, 2020)

Review: And now Dario’s Agger’s scheme becomes clear with the coming of Xemnu: convincing the world that Hulk is a bad guy by rewriting everyone’s memories. This is a scarier concept than most supervillain plots, which usually target physical wellbeing. This one, though, is so purely Philip K. Dick, with phony implanted memories, that one would never know one is being invaded and conquered inside the head. Bruce Banner controlled by Hulk is one thing, controlled by Xemnu is entirely another. But the Green Scar is on Hulk’s side so there should be nothing to worry about, right? But it’s not easy to see what the big guy could do to battle the captivity of Banner’s brain. So we’ll see.

Comments: First mention that Charlene McGowan is a trans person. Credits for the Xemnu sequence: Javier Rodriguez, pencils and colors, Alvaro Lopez, inks. Ruy Jose and Belardino Brabo share inking duties on the main story.
