Synopsis

Indestructible Hulk (2013 series) #9 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars

A SHIELD Helicarrier flies above New York City, Director Maria Hill preparing for a strike against Agence Byzantine, a cadre of arms dealers, on their ship in the harbor. She finds Bruce Banner using a cell phone to contact his mysterious outside contact to prove he is not being mistreated by SHIELD; Bruce is using a newly invented communications system of his own using infrabands—and we discover his contact is Matt Murdock a/k/a Daredevil. The agents don parachutes and Hill tells Bruce he is just going in as an observer; he then jumps and discovers his chute is a knapsack—so it's the Hulk who crashes into the enemy ship. As Hulk plows through the baddies, Daredevil confronts Hill over the use of Hulk as a human shield against the villains' Thor-level ordnance. An agent falls into the darkened hold of the ship and DD goes down to rescue him; a baddie fires a sonic rifle that deafens everyone but especially Daredevil. Hulk smashes the weapon and DD has to intervene to keep Hulk from killing the bad guy. Hulk reverts to Bruce Banner and notices there's a gun missing from the stores. DD can detect a faint ultrasound from the weapon so he and Bruce set out to follow it, the latter against Maria Hill's orders. The two take a wild taxi ride and trail the baddie to a bar that is known for armament deals. Bruce changes to Hulk (by means of the cab's jumper cables) and they enter the place, Hulk causing even the most hardened thugs to step back. The baddie gets the drop on them with the sonic rifle and Hulk pushes against the deafening sound until (I'm not sure how) the whole place goes up in flames. The baddie is the only one to escape and he goes to the address on a slip of paper (no idea where he got this) where he discovers he is working for Baron Zemo....

Indestructible Hulk (2013 series) #9 Review by (April 9, 2019)

Review: Cool tale is an offbeat and unlikely pairing of Hulk and Daredevil but it works mainly by making Hulk dumber than he's been of late. DD explains that when he tells Hulk not to kill the baddie, Big Green responds to the tone rather than the words; seems to me that even at his dumbest, Hulk isn't animal-level dumb. That bothered me a bit but this series has already established that the Hulk's intellect changes with the circumstances of his transformation so as to allow each writer the privilege to change Big Green's IQ to suit the story (actually that's explained next issue). But still, Hulk seems a bit too dumb which makes the chatty DD sound patronizing; fortunately he deals with Bruce as an equal and that's most of their interaction in this issue. In addition there are the pair of plot holes mentioned in the synopsis and the barroom confrontation, while cool, seems overly familiar, especially to DD fans. More to come.

Comments: “Marvel Now!”--Cover. Part one of two parts. Agence Byzantine first appeared in DAREDEVIL Vol 3 #6
