Story Name:

A Titan Walks Among Us!

Synopsis

Marvel Feature (1971 series) #3 synopsis by Julio M2
Rating: 5 stars
A space capsule occupied by astronauts Beame and Wagner is surrounded by a rare white vapor before it clashes to the sea. Namor, who was in the area, saves them from being swallowed by a giant squid. The two pilots decide to change the space program for a quieter job. And disguised as Cap'n Cal and Xemnu, they become TV celebrities by hosting a children's program called Astro-Nuts. The audience loves it.

But nobody knows that Xemnu is Wagner no more. He's an alien with enormous strength and psionic powers who intends to bring human children to his planet.

Jim Wilson suspects something is fishy and contacts Doctor Strange. The sorcerer, disguised as the Hulk, assists as a special guest for an edition broadcasted from Cape Canaveral (Cape Kennedy).

Meanwhile, Bruce Banner sees himself (his alter ego) on television, he changes into the jade giant and leaps towards the impostor.

Xemnu hypnotizes children instructing them to go aboard a rocket. Doctor Strange removes his Hulk disguise and tries stopping the monster. But Xemnu resists his spells. Namor is called by the sorcerer but can't stop Xemnu either. It's the Hulk who defeats the alien (he punches until Xemnu simply turns into vapor) and prevents the children from been stolen.

Despite all, Thunderbolt Ross' soldiers attack the giant but little they can do. The Sub-Mariner and the Hulk leave the scene regretful of having helped. Doctor Strange casts a spell to erase the memory of children and the world about these events.

Review / Commentaries

Marvel Feature (1971 series) #3 Review by (October 20, 2020)

Comments: An orange Xemnu first appeared as “The Hulk” in JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #62 and 66 (reprinted in MONSTERS ON THE PROWL #11 and 14 with Xemnu colored white and renamed “The Titan”); here he becomes (likely) the first pre-FF giant monster to appear in an Earth-616 story, with Fin Fang Foom to be the most notable one to appear. This issue contains a large number of contemporary/pop culture references, including Archie Bunker (main character of the popular TV series ALL IN THE FAMILY), controversial Congress member Adam Clayton Powell, and the sci-fi book and movie THE ANDROMEDA STRAIN by Michael Crichton. Also, 1950s kid show HOWDY DOODY and 1930s-40s Charlie McCarthy and Mortimer Snerd, puppets of ventriloquist Edgar Bergen.
