No Way To Treat A Lady

Synopsis

Marvel Team-Up (1972 series) #82 synopsis by reviewer Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Midnight in Midtown Manhattan, a nervous woman walks the streets unsure of why she is there. A gang of four hoods starts following her and she runs off but they corner her in an alley, with mayhem on their minds. One guy slaps her and grabs her purse but Spider-Man appears suddenly and clobbers three of the hoods. Then he slips in the ice and the last punk pulls a knife and tries to stab him but the woman unleashes some karate moves and takes him down. Spidey is surprised and when he looks closely, the recognizes her as the Black Widow. She panics and denies it, fainting in his arms....

She awakens on a rooftop where Spidey has taken her to recuperate. He calms her fears and offers her soup from a deli. She claims to be Nancy Rushman, a third-grade teacher from Upstate. She isn’t the Black Widow, doesn’t know how she took down the bad guy, and doesn’t know where she lives or why she’s in New York City. Spidey finds the Black Widow’s costume in her purse and she doesn’t know where it came from and starts to break down so Spidey backs off. He suggests she try it on since it seems warmer than the coat she’s wearing. But it doesn’t lead to her recovering her memory so she changes back to her regular clothes and asks to be taken to a hospital...

…and suddenly they are under attack from a SHIELD Strike Force led by the Contessa on their lying sleds. Spidey grabs Nancy and runs down the side while Val orders her troops to shoot to kill. Spidey dodges and shoots a web to one of the flying craft and they hitch a ride to another rooftop. Spidey is grazed by a bullet and a SHIELD agent catches up to them and prepares to shoot but Nancy jumps into action, disarming the agent and knocking her out, which causes Nancy to nearly panic. Spidey sends her into the building to escape while he holds off the Agents. Seeing Spidey overwhelmed by enemies, Nancy returns and fires her Widow’s Stings and launches some kicks, defeating the attackers. Then Nick Fury arrives and shoots Nancy. When Spidey sees blood he attacks Fury, who shoots him too….

Marvel Team-Up (1972 series) #82 Review by (December 23, 2025)

Review: An intriguing issue. Why doesn’t Black Widow know who she is? (It’s really her, the cover says so.) And why is SHIELD out to kill her? And why can’t the crack SHIELD agents hit Spidey on the side of a building holding a woman in his arms? [We weren’t supposed to ask that last one.] An interesting plot, with Natasha switching between a normal panicked woman and her usual confident self surfacing from time to time. Nice lead-in to the four-part epic—and a bit subdued as things get very complicated very quickly.

Comments: Part one of four parts. Spidey jokes that “Nancy Rushman” must have failed Amy Carter for SHIELD to be trying to kill her; Amy was the daughter of then President Jimmy Carter who famously attended public school. Colorist Barry Grossman credited as Ben Sean. Gaspar Saladino did the lettering on page 1.
