New Avengers (2005 series) #8 cover

Story Name:

The Sentry—Part Two

Synopsis

New Avengers (2005 series) #8 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars

The story open in a Silver Age comic book as the Sentry battles Super-Skrull and the Void (special guest appearance by Thor!), then we pull back to learn that the comic book is being read by Robert Reynolds, as Captain America and Iron Man attempt to discover who he really is….

One week earlier, Tony Stark made an offer to Wolverine to join the New Avengers, trying to convince the notorious loner that it would be good for his public image and the Avengers need a member who is more cynical and versed in the ways of the world. Today, in battle with the Wrecker, Wolverine comes down for a hard landing after being hurled into the air by his foe. Wrecker demands that Spider-Woman show him how to fly the Quinjet out of there. She responds that she only wants to help. She asks if this is all he wants out of life, an existence in prison or on the run. She asks him what he wants; Wrecker slows down to think…and the recovered Wolverine and Luke Cage punch his lights out and Spider-Man webs him up to wait for SHIELD to collect him. Spider-Woman reveals that she releases a pheromone that attracts men to her; the male heroes now understand their sudden amorous feelings toward her. A hologram Iron Man appears to summon them to Hartford, Connecticut….

Back in the Nevada cave, Bob Reynolds withdraws; his wife Lindy pleads with him to remember, but the memory of her gruesome death is too vivid in his mind. Suddenly a bright light flares up and when it subsides, Reynolds is gone. He finds himself in his normal man form, relaxing at home in Hartford in front of the TV. Emma Frost appears on the tube and tells him to go outside…where the Avengers and a multitude of heroes are assembled on the lawn. Reynolds sinks to his knees and informs them that the Void has arrived and there’s nothing they can do to stop it….

Review / Commentaries

New Avengers (2005 series) #8 Review by (March 2, 2010)
Variant cover by John Romita is designed to look like a Silver Age Marvel comic. Last page guests include the Fantastic Four, the Sub-Mariner, the X-Men (Cyclops, Beast, Emma Frost, Kitty Pryde, Colossus), Dr Strange, the Inhumans (Black Bolt, Medusa, Karnak, Gorgon, Lockjaw).

New Avengers (2005 series) #8 Review by (June 10, 2013)
Wolverine refers to his recent past. He was brainwashed by Hydra in the Enemy of the State arc in Wolverine (2003) #20-25. His promise to Prof X and his role as schoolteacher refer to Prof X leaving his school to the X-Men after the Xorn/Magneto affair ending in (New) X-Men #150, and the teaching of new students in New Mutants (2003). Wrecker vs mutant teens in LA is a reference to his last previous appearance in Runaways (2005) #1.
