Thor #607 Review by (October 22, 2012)
Review: Supplement to the epic SIEGE event, this story arc is a bit of a jumble as the story does not make sense unless you have read the central series. The problem isn’t too bad with this issue: Volstagg’s “crime” is sort of explained and the parts with Knut and the Thor clone don’t need much context. Though this issue still feels a little like deleted scenes from a movie, the real problem doesn’t show until next issue. And Volstagg is actually endearing as he agonizes over his unwitting part in a scheme he can’t fathom. And he goes viral as well!

Comments: The action runs parallel to that of SIEGE #1. The artwork is split between two creative teams: Elson and Mounts did the scenes in Asgard, the page with Kelda, and the nation’s reaction to Volstagg’s video; Tan/Bergantino/Strain contributed the Volstagg and Heimdall sections. Thor appears only in the video footage of his defeat by the Dark Avengers.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Thor #607 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Volstagg, having been tricked by Norman Osborn into destroying a crowded sports arena causing many casualties, makes his way back to Broxton where he surrenders to the local police. In Asgard, King Balder looks for a way toward a peaceful resolution and in the meantime bids his warriors join him in a feast. The blind soothsayer Knut enters with prophecies of doom for Asgard; the city will fall, Knut himself will die the next day. Tyr scoffs and Heimdall foresees nothing; Knut tells the latter his vision will fail and the former that the God of War will die on the morrow. Loki offers to help the distraught old man back to his room. Once there, Loki waits for the bell to toll midnight, and when it does he makes the first of Knut’s prophecies come true, the one spoken of his death….

Hours later Heimdall awakens to find his bedroom has been transported to the dark and fiery heart of Asgard. Now he foresees the invasion force coming but he has no way of alerting his brethren….

In Broxton, the Lady Kelda visits Bill’s parents to inform them of the death of their son….

The siege of Asgard begins and Hogun discovers that Knut is dead; he then rouses the warriors to battle….

At the Broxton police station, Volstagg and the cops see TV reports that Thor has been defeated and captured by Osborn’s Dark Avengers. The cops let Volstagg out of jail and assist him in creating a video in which he tells his side of the story. It is then posted on the internet where the nation begins to debate Osborn’s police action against the Norse Gods. Thor arrives in town and confronts a surprised Volstagg—but it isn’t Thor, it is the clone called Ragnarok, who prepares to kill the lusty warrior as an act of justice….
