Thor #609 Review by (November 6, 2012)
Review: The highlight of the issue—and I do mean high light—is Balder’s shining glory to assemble the warriors of Asgard, then there’s Kelda’s crowning moment of awesome, Tyr clobbering Thunderball with his own, er, thunderball, and Volstagg’s low-key heroics. Still the issue seems like a handful of deleted scenes without the context of SIEGE.

Comments: Thor does not appear in this issue. The action runs parallel to that of SIEGE #4. The artwork is split between two creative teams: Tan/Batt/Strain did the Volstagg plot and the pages featuring Balder; Elson and Chung contributed the Tyr and Kelda sections.

Thor #609 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Lady Kelda has left Bill’s parents’ house to be confronted by Norman Osborn’s H.A.M.M.E.R. forces demanding her surrender. The sound of the falling Asgard rattles everyone; Kelda reacts with anger and the soldiers shoot her down.

At the ruined Asgard, Volstagg picks himself out of the rubble and returns to battle. Tyr defeats the braggart Thunderball of the Wrecking Crew….

As Bill’s dad tries to talk sense into the soldiers, his mom convinces the despairing and guilt-ridden Kelda to go on living as that’s what Bill would want. She rises into the air, exhibiting all of her Stormrider powers and destroys the H.A.M.M.E.R. troops’ weapons. Some fleeing soldiers run right into Volstagg who easily overpowers them and delivers them to the local police. The weighty warrior wants to turn himself in but the cops persuade him to look after Asgard….

Balder encounters Loki and punches him in the face; the oily God of Evil admits to his role in the disaster yet spins the story to make it seem as though everything was Balder’s fault: exiling Thor rather than pardoning him, bringing the Aesir to the point of civil war, and then suggesting that Balder abdicate the throne. Balder mounts a promontory and shines forth with his glory to rally the troops to him. The Hood takes a shot at him but Balder deflects the bullet with a swordstroke, stunning the villains. As the warriors gather, King Balder exiles Loki but the God of Evil is not done yet….
