If I Should Die Before I Wake...!

Synopsis

Thor (1966 series) #343 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 5 stars

As Fafnir destroys New York looking for Thor, the God of Thunder is in the Antarctic with the last Viking, Eilif the Lost. To aid in granting the aged warrior’s wish to die in battle, Thor petitions Odin for permission to make Eilif his battle companion; Odin sends Thor’s chariot and the winged horse Cloudrider for Eilif….

Subplots, grouped in one place: Lorelei plots vengeance against Fafnir. The Norn Queen wishes to heal Balder of his emotional turmoil so she can possess his perfect beauty. Surtur forges the mighty sword Twilight. Heimdall sees a gathering darkness approaching Asgard.

Thor grants Eilif physical (and emotional) strength for the coming battle and a disguised Odin adds his blessing to Eilif’s spear and the two fly off to confront the rampaging dragon Fafnir in the Bronx. The nightmarish brawl ends when the mortally wounded Eilif climbs to a high point and throws himself down and his enchanted spear pierces the dragon’s hide. Thor sees this and uses Mjolnir to drive the spear into Fafnir’s heart, killing him. Thor then prepares a massive Viking funeral for Eilif and the Valkyries come down to take the valiant warrior to Valhalla.

Epilogue: Lorelei, giving her name as Melodi, stops by Sigurd Jarlson’s apartment to properly thank him for saving her life….

Review / Commentaries

Thor (1966 series) #343 Review by (September 18, 2013)
Review: A stunning issue gives is an epic battle and the poignant fate of the Last Viking and the art on the one-page Surtur subplot is amazing!

Comments: Part two of two. First appearance of Surtur’s sword Twilight, which figures in many later tales. Though talked about a lot, Balder does not appear in the issue.
