Synopsis

Captain America (1998 series) #39 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3 stars
Captain America leads a SHIELD force including Sharon Carter, Dum Dum Dugan and Cameron Klein against a force of deadly robots. He recalls his visit earlier in the day to Arlington National Cemetery with his girlfriend Connie Ferrari to lay flowers on the grave of her brother, who died in a hazing incident (though Nick Fury thinks David is alive and a threat). The young lovers are interrupted by Sharon and Klein, come to enlist Cap’s aid against the AIM leader (who survived the last issue) and his attempts to clone another Protocide. Connie, meanwhile, has gotten a call from her client Chet Madden who is about to be arrested by the Feds at his Iowa factory. This leads to the usual Steve-Connie clash about the rights of the guilty to a defense. Before joining the mission, Steve stops briefly by the grave of Bucky Barnes. Now on the mission, Cap takes the lead, busting the AIM robots to pave the way for his fellow agents to enter. The team then falls through a hole in the floor—and lands in Hell where Mephisto’s minions start to drag them down to the pit. Cap realizes that it has to be the work of Cache, master of mind tricks and hurls his shield, disrupting the illusion. As hero confronts villain, Klein unleashes a device he built, converting Cache into a data stream and trapping him inside a storage container. They then come upon the AIM director in Mandroid armor, jetting to safety; Cap leaps on the villain’s back and, forcing himself to withstand the electric feedback, shatters the suit’s battery pack, sending them crashing to the ground. Cap unmasks the mastermind as…Chet Madden. Connie Ferrari arrives threatening to sue the SHIELD agents for false arrest....

Review / Commentaries

Captain America (1998 series) #39 Review by (May 31, 2010)
Comments: Part one of a two part story. Review: The dynamic art of Cap crashing through robots is what makes this issue entertaining, the story a bit less so. Wowser!
