Synopsis

Captain America #14 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Outside the NextGen secure facility, the Winter Soldier fires at the Falcon…and misses, thanks to the hero having been warned by Redwing. He quickly aims at Captain America and sees a red-white-and-blue shield zooming at his head. He ducks and calls out the security forces. Cap crashes through the soldiers and into the complex while the Falcon covers his back—by taking on the squad single-handedly. Sharon Carter contacts Cap to warn him of a network of tunnels behind the building and that he must capture his quarry or risk losing him. Not to worry, Cap comes face-to-face with the Winter Soldier moments later and they fight. Meanwhile, Sharon and a SHIELD team have arrived outside and they take out the guards and join Falcon in the search for Cap. As Captain America and the former Bucky Barnes struggle, Cap appeals to his opponent to try to overcome his conditioning. When the Soldier insists he is no one Cap knows, Cap stands back and invites his foe to kill him. Winter Soldier pauses…then fires. Cap ducks and ricochets his shield off the ceiling, striking the Soldier in the back and spilling the Cosmic Cube on the floor. Cap picks up the Cube and commands the Winter Soldier, "Remember who you are." The sudden inrush of memories causes the assassin to recoil in pain. Bucky says that Cap should have just killed him, then seizes the Cube in his cyborg hand and crushes it. A sudden outpouring of energy fills the room and when it clears, the Winter Soldier is gone. Sharon and Falcon believe he is dead but Cap is convinced his former partner is still alive….

Winter Soldier—Bucky Barnes—appears at the abandoned Fort Lehigh where he recalls his first meeting with Steve Rogers, Captain America….

At Kronas headquarters, Aleksander Lukin is berated by the voice in his head for losing the Cosmic Cube, claiming he could have used it to heal his injured aide and restore the Soviet Union if he so desired. Lukin replies that the Cube is cursed since it trapped him in his own body with the mind of the Red Skull….

Review / Commentaries

Captain America #14 Review by (March 9, 2011)
Comments: The story clearly contradicts the theory that the Winter Soldier was not Bucky Barnes until Cap used the Cosmic Cube to make him so; this idea is based on the mistaken assumption that Cap said “Remember you are Bucky Barnes,” which is obviously not the case. Winter Soldier’s backup troops are ex-Spetznaz, the Russian special forces. The young Bucky is seen in flashback.
