Synopsis

Captain America #17 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

The AIM operatives captured by Steve Rogers and Sharon Carter ask for their help in defeating Crossbones and Sin who have taken over their lab. They explain how the entire town of Pilsburg, Iowa is a front for an AIM research laboratory. Recently the lab was invaded by a super-powered agent (whom Cap and the reader know was Bucky Barnes) who sabotaged key prototypes and battled a spider-robot. Things got worse two nights ago when Crossbones and Sin, who followed the trail of the AIM man they killed in Kansas, shot their way into the complex and opened the vault, giving them access to devastating weaponry. Some AIM agents escaped and, hearing Captain America was in town, appealed to him for help. Sharon calls in the SHIELD force that was on standby and they assault the underground base. It turns out to be a trap and the enemy forces are ready for them. Sin accidentally activates the MODOC Squad of cyborg killers and flees. Cap and Sharon lead the fight against the murder machines and when the dust clears, Sin and Crossbones have gotten away with their only prize: a SHIELD hostage. Cap heads back to the hotel to confirm his idea as to why Bucky Barnes was in that town to begin with: the former owner of the hotel was Gretchen Zeller, Bucky’s wartime sweetheart. He tracked her down only to learn she had married, moved to America and died some time ago. Gretchen’s adult daughter tells them that Bucky asked where she was buried so he could pay his respects before it was too late. On their way out of town, Steve suspects that Bucky was steered to this place by Nick Fury so he could take out the AIM cell—and his reference to it being too late means that he intends to kill Aleksander Lukin—and doesn’t expect to survive the mission….

Meanwhile, in a hidden dungeon, Crossbones and Sin are torturing the captured SHIELD agent to learn who killed the Red Skull. The man mutters Lukin’s name; Crossbones kills him and the evil pair set out on their scheme of vengeance….
