Doctor Voodoo and the Soul Cage Part One

Synopsis

Incredible Hulk #12 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

At Strange Academy, three young students (Doyle Dormammu, Zoe Laveau, Shaylee Moonpeddle) are playing videogames when a loud thundering noise attracts their attention, as it shakes the whole house. They realize there is something bad coming their way so they take up defensive positions. Then the Hulk crashes through the wall, looking for Doctor Strange, and the kids flee. The young Frost Giant Guslaug takes on Hulk and is quickly defeated. Then Doctor Voodoo arrives and he forces Hulk to transform back into Bruce Banner. Bruce hands over the Frozen Charlotte doll that contains Charlie’s soul and asks the wizard for help….

Voodoo meditates on the doll for several hours, tells the kids to stay out of the basement and he goes down to see Bruce, who is restrained by magic chains. He explains to Bruce that when a demon is driven out, if it cannot be destroyed, it is caged, and he produces a soul cage: a small wooden figure with nails driven into it. He asks if Bruce is ready to risk eternity trapped with evil spirits to save this girl. Bruce quickly responds with a yes as Hulk and Bruce are all she’s got—and vice versa. Voodoo draws out Bruce’s soul, fashions it into a glowing nail, and hammers it into the soul cage’s head. Bruce is drawn in after it, leaving his body behind. But the body transforms into Hulk who withstands Doctor Voodoo’s attacks….

In the cage, Bruce breaks out of a wooden coffin, finding himself hanging over a cliff; he grabs a tree root to protect himself but the root breaks, and he plunges, only to be caught by Hulk, who says, “Finally. Got you….”

Incredible Hulk #12 Review by (May 1, 2024)

Review: Nice setup for the next battle with a monster incorporates Strange Academy and its offbeat residents to provide a humorous opening before we get down to cases. Guest appearance by the former Brother Voodoo, a holdover from Marvel’s horror-filled 1970s, and one of the better used ones. Nic Klein’s dark art suits this more horrific take on Hulk rather nicely. So Hulk will be facing demons while trapped on their grounds. Good to know.
