Doctor Voodoo and the Soul Cage Part Two

Synopsis

Incredible Hulk #13 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Bruce Banner has been sent into the Soul Cage by Doctor Voodoo where he encounters Hulk who wants to kill him for trying over the years to kill Hulk under guise of a cure. They are interrupted by a man hanging upside down with a trio of little demons gnawing at his midsection. The figure tells them not to seek Sumanguru and then its legs break off, sending the man plunging into the abyss. The three demons then attack Bruce who falls into a giant nest where he is menaced by a huge monster bird. Bruce finds a sword in the straw and bisects a demon; Hulk intervenes and subdues the bird. Bruce accuses Hulk of getting Charlie killed and tells him they will settle their accounts but only after they rescue Charlie….

They fly the bird to an ornately carved cave; the bird is then killed by a monster bat and they enter. The voice of Sumanguru the Flesh-Weaver challenges them. They are soon surrounded by an army of grotesque monsters, each a vessel of Sumanguru. Bruce asks him to create a body for Charlie’s soul trapped in a porcelain body. Sumanguru refuses as they are allied with Jericho Drumm and attacks. Hulk fights off the monsters while Bruce hurls a torch at the roof to see the real Sumanguru, a giant combination of man and spider. He attacks in his true form and Hulk easily defeats him. The vanquished villain explains that he could create a new body for Charlie but could not bind her soul to it. He gives them cryptic directions to what they seek, “In the deserts of the West, find a paradise of sin” where they will find the “pelt of a bestial god” which holds the power they seek. The creature then slashes Hulk’s chest and a drop of green blood forms an entire new Hulk. Bruce calls out to Doctor Voodoo who removes the nail from the Soul Cage and Bruce emerges, with a wound across his chest….

Later, Bruce thanks Dr. Voodoo for his help and he sets out for the “paradise of sin,” Las Vegas….

Incredible Hulk #13 Review by (June 12, 2024)

Review: And I thought Al Ewing had a monopoly on horrific visions but PK Johnson is also a winner. This version of the hellscape is very vivid and nightmarish and there’s more to come. But will the Hulk and Banner settling their accounts be even dark? We’ll see….

Comments: Issue includes a text article on the history of Sumanguru the Flesh-Weaver. Issue includes a tribute to the late Native American artist Jeffrey Veregge, who incorporated comic book heroes into his art and created some covers for Marvel.
