The history of Verity Willis is interspersed with the battle for Asgard which is occupying the attention of all the usual Thor cast (minus any Thor). Many years ago, Eric Willis, guardian of the Casket of Ancient Winters, gave his son Roger a magic ring that would enable the wearer to see through any lie. Many years later, Roger is married and one day loses the ring, which is found and swallowed by his infant daughter Verity. She is rushed to a hospital where a doctor discovers that the ring has dissolved in the baby’s throat….
In Asgardia, Odin and Freyja, bearing the deadliest of Earthly armaments, lead the battle against the forces of Death, led by Hela and Tyr and accompanied by the wicked King Loki riding the Midgard Serpent. A young soldier Unthar is poisoned by the Serpent’s venom and dies but since he died with fear in his heart, he is immediately resurrected and joins Hela’s army of the dead. The grim battle continues….
Verity grew up, and with the ability to see through lies, became more and more reclusive as she found she couldn’t trust anyone. Later she registered with the government under the Superhuman Registration Act and searched for a job until she found one she could do from home, conducting surveys, able to weed out bad data. Her mother worried about her and finally persuaded her to try a speed-dating service.... [This is where she would meet young Loki in issue #2].
The battle is going against the Asgardians so Freyja leaps onto the Midgard Serpent’s head, mocking Loki’s pretensions and delivering a stunning blow to his head; she then drives the spike of her scepter into the dragon’s skull to make it explode, sacrificing herself to destroy the monster. Other foes of Asgard, perceiving the weakness of the realm, are joining the enemy forces so Odin summons the Gjallarhorn, blowing it to call all Asgardians to the war. On the Isle of Silence, the exiled Lorelei and Sigurd are freed to answer the summons….
As Verity finishes her story as requested by the new female Loki, God of Stories, she feels herself becoming insubstantial. Loki directs her attention to the floor, where she is shocked to see her own body. “Trust me. I still know what I’m doing…” says Loki….
