Secret Avengers #5 cover

Story Name:

The Secret Life of Max Fury

Synopsis

Secret Avengers #5 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Five years ago, Nick Fury was in Paris, on the run from SHIELD though he couldn’t remember what he was accused of. Spotted by his own agents, he managed to escape through the streets and made his way back to his apartment, where he was captured by…Nick Fury…

Today, Nick Fury meets with Steve Rogers and Sharon Carter, who question him about the Shadow Council agent (issues #1-4) who looks exactly like him. Fury is shocked to recognize the villain: it is an LMD created by Fury’s brother who was the supervillain Scorpio—an advanced android which was infused with Fury’s full memories, and believed it really was Nick Fury. When Scorpio fell, the android went insane when it discovered it was not the real Nick Fury, and escaped from SHIELD custody some time ago. The LMD spent its time as Fury would have, busting up terror plots by Hydra and A.I.M. until it was recaptured in Paris five years ago. Fury had the LMD deactivated and destroyed. But here he is…. Steve is angry with Fury, since it was his treatment of the LMD that turned it into an enemy, though Fury tries to justify his actions by appealing to the secrets the android contained.

A flashback five years shows how Shadow Council Agent John Steele infiltrated the SHIELD Helicarrier and reactivated the android, substituting a standard LMD to be destroyed. Steel names the sentient double Max and they escape…. Today, John Steele gives Max Fury the assignment to keep watch over Steve Rogers’ Secret Avengers, and, if necessary, to take them down….

Review / Commentaries

Secret Avengers #5 Review by (August 8, 2012)
Comments: Most of the Avengers only appear on a computer screen on the final two pages. The Scorpio story arc that introduced Max Fury was in DEFENDERS #46-51. First appearance of John Steele in this title; he made his first and only Golden Age appearance in DARING MYSTERY COMICS #1 (1940) and was revived in THE MARVELS PROJECT. Marvel continuity: the Paris newspaper headline from “five years ago” has an article about Spider-Man’s new black costume. Issue includes a six-page preview of CHAOS WAR #1.
