Synopsis

Secret Avengers (2010 series) #6 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

In the middle of the night, Shang-Chi is attacked in his home by ninjas from the order of Hai-Dai, a group which disbanded when his father died. Suddenly he is joined by the mystic hero John Aman, Prince of Orphans and they drive their foes away….

Two days earlier Steve Rogers, head of the Secret Avengers, received a call from John Anan, who had been investigating the Hai Dai who were searching for the Eyes of the Dragon. Beast’s database search revealed that the Eyes of the Dragon are a pair of mystical gems which, when combined with a spell from a hidden scroll, can raise the dead. They could only be raising their dead master Zheng Zu, father of Shang-Chi. Steve dispatched John to find the young man….

Now Steve Rogers, Shang-Chi, and the Black Widow parachute to the roof of the International Finance Centre in Hong Kong. They make their way silently down an elevator shift to reach the Chinese art exhibit where they Eyes can be found. They discover that the Eyes housed there are fakes; suddenly they are attacked by the Hai Dai….

Epilogue: Director Thorndrake of the Shadow Council assures his guest, the half-living Zheng Zu, that they will soon have the last ingredient for bringing him fully back: the blood of his son Shang-Chi….

Review / Commentaries

Secret Avengers (2010 series) #6 Review by (May 3, 2014)
Comments: Shang-Chi was introduced in SPECIAL MARVEL EDITION #15 (in 1971) as the rebellious son of Fu Manchu; the comic was retitled MASTER OF KUNG FU at issue #17. Fu Manchu was an Asian supervillain created by Arthur Sarsfield Ward under the pen name Sax Rohmer; the first novel THE MYSTERY OF DR. FU-MANCHU (retitled THE INSIDIOUS DR. FU-MANCHU in the USA) was published in 1913; Rohmer would pen twelve more novels, the last appearing in 1959. When Marvel lost the license to use the Fu Manchu name and characters, Shang-Chi’s father became anonymous or appeared under a pseudonym. He perished in MASTER OF KUNG FU #118 and is being resurrected here and given the “real name” of Zheng Zu.
