Synopsis

America (2017 series) #1 synopsis by Rob Johnson
Rating: 4 stars
After some 1st page endorsements by Hawkeye (Kate Bishop), Spider-Man (Miles Morales), Loki, Storm and Gabby Rivera (the writer), and a not endorsement from Black Cat, the story itself begins ...

... on planet Maltixa on the outskirts of the Utopian Parallel where America Chavez (wearing what looks like a superhero costume) and fellow Ultimates Captain Marvel and Spectrum defend some inhabitants from attack by an alien female Entity. In particular Chavez saves a young girl and reunites her with her mother, briefly remembering her own 2 mothers in the Parallel. But she has no time for that because her friends aren't doing well against the Entity. However when *she* hits it, it disintegrates into little 5-pointed star shapes (like those of the portals she can create). Amazingly any damage the Entity did is healed. She and the girl Imani introduce themselves to each other and she tells Imani that she can contact her on Beamchat@Viva_America (on an interdimensional Internet).

The female Ultimates in their spacecraft fly home through 1 of America's portals and contact the 2 male Ultimates Black Panther and Blue Marvel to discuss what the powerful Entity might be and how come everything it had done just mended itself. They promise to keep an eye on the Parallel while their leader America catches up with her paramedic girlfriend Lisa before heading off to college tomorrow.

She does meet Lisa Halloran at her home in New York, and has to apologise for missing their lunch date for intergalactic reasons. Lisa forgives her and says there's an Oreo milkshake waiting for her. But America thinks of a better idea and carries her to the bedroom. That night in bed Lisa confesses that she's not going to follow America to the college (to work in a nearby hospital). Although this was the plan Lisa says she really only agreed to it to make her lover happy. Chavez gets angry and quickly gets dressed. She throws a gift neckchain back in Lisa's face and leaves in a huff through a star-portal. We see Lisa saying that she really does love her.

She drives Route 6 in her van (in a cross between her uniform above and her usual casual attire) and meets Kate Bishop in a car in a desert midway between NY and California (where Kate is a PI in Los Angeles in her own Hawkeye series). Kate tells her it's OK to be upset about breaking up with Lisa but America brushes it off. She tells her that she's *really* leaving to become a smarter/stronger/better person. And she drives off through a portal ...

... to a strange Sotomayor University (in a protected space between dimensions). Leaving her van she enters the canpus and is immediately accosted by breakdancing members of the Leelumultipass Phi Theta Beta sorority who know she's America Chavez, leader of the Ultimates and paramedic of the multiverse. Their leader X'Andria asks her to pledge with them but smiling she says she 'doesn't pledge on the 1st date. And she  rushes off very late for her 1st class.

Entering the room she finds herself in what she's told is a holographic simulation of an ice world where Rojalia Amante fires neuron arrows at her, as used in the ancient war of Famines against the Titans. Professor Douglas, teacher of the class on Intergalactic Revolutionaries, warns her that whatever she experiences here will *really* happen to her. So if she fails to explain how Amante succeeded in defending her people the class will fall into the freezing water and really will freeze, but will get resuscitated afterwards. America discovers that none of her powers work in this simulation but then another student David Alleyne pipes up to relate that Amante sacrificed her powers to the goddesses of the ice who returned them with their own powers added. Douglas declares the class ended and tasks them each to pick an ancient revolutionary and develop a simulation of their most famous battle for the next class.

America greets David who she knows as the genius Prodigy from her time in the Young Avengers. She asks him how he got here because she heard he lost his powers, but he tells her he doesn't have to be a mutant to be accepted for this University. The Prof recites AC's history:- Daughter of 2 mothers. Raised in the Utopian Parallel. Her mothers sacrificed their lives to save the multiverse with powers from the Demiurge. She left Utopia to help other universes. But the Prof says she still has to prove that she deserves her place here.

David invites her round to his place where he shows her his prototype time machine he calls the Wayback. He's hoping that combined with her dimension-travelling powers they could travel anywhere and anywhen. She impulsively hits the button without learning how to control it, but just concentrates on her desired destination. En route we see some images:- Her moms with the newborn America. Lisa crying about her. And 2 from next issue:- Imani with her hair died red, white and blue with some other girls and a strange chart. And Prof Douglas in a strange setting.

But instead of her moms in the past of the Utopian Parallel she winds up in (an alternate) WWII Germany. Her interdimensional mobile phone can't get a signal. Some German troops toss a grenade at some Allied soldiers but she casually swats it back to them. Captain America, with his original triangular shield) rushes past saying he's got Hitler in his sights. But our heroine punches Adolf in the moustache.

Review / Commentaries

America (2017 series) #1 Review by (February 15, 2025)
Joe Riverra helps his son Paolo with the inking.

The issue title is that of a song, and spanishdict.com tells me it means "Let´s go outside, let´s go to the street".

Sotomayor University is named after (the real life) Sonia Sotomayor who was the 3rd woman (1st female Hispanic) on the Supreme Court.

The final scene of America Chavez punching Hitler is probably an homage to the cover of Captain America Comics #1, which is also the only issue where Cap sported a triangular shield.

This series contains the only issues where people actually visit or live in the Utopian Parallel dimension. All other cases are just mentions of it or flashbacks in AC's memories. So this series is problematic when her memories prove to be false in the AC: Made In The USA series.

America Chavez and the other 4 Ultimates are here straight from Ultimates² #6. But the other 4 don't continue into our #2, although Blue Marvel will be next seen in #4.
Captain Marvel will be very busy starting with Jean Grey #2. Spectrum won't show until Mighty Captain Marvel #5, and Black Panther will wait until the whole team reassembles for Secret Empire #0.

Lisa Halloran, who debuted in the Ultimates taster in the 2015 Avengers #0, was last seen in #12 of the previous Ults series but she'll continue to appear here.

After his mutant career Prodigy was in Young Avengers vol 2 with AC and a tale spread across the Original Sins mini-series with YAers Hulkling and Marvel Boy, and then Civil War II: Choosing sides #3 before turning up here. He'll stay in this series.

Kate Bishop is here after #6 of her own Hawkeye series followed by a cameo in the Christmassy Spider-Man/Deadpool #12 (coincidentally with BP&CM), and A Year Of Marvels New Year's Eve Infinite Comic.
After this app she'll go through Unbelievable Gwenpool #14-15 with Ghost Rider (Robbie Reyes), cameo (with AC) in the finale #17 of Patsy Walker AKA Hellcat, and have #7-11 of her series before returning for our #5-6.
