The heroes gathered for the mysterious funeral hear from Iron Man and Namor about the events surrounding the mission to recover the stolen Helicarrier. In a flashback to the end of the last issue, Captain America, Sharon Carter, Nick Fury, and Namor are overcome by a restrictor beam. The Red Skull explains that by the internalized power of the Cosmic Cube, all of his memories of Hitler, his dreams and ideals were formed into a living embodiment of emotion, and the new Hate-Monger was born; now he plans to use SHIELD’s psi-weaponry to spread the fanatical hatred throughout America in order to conquer the nation. The Hate-Monger tries to control Cap’s mind though his hatred of injustice, but Cap resists as his real motivation is love for his country. Cap is set on fire by the Red Skull but through sheer will power manages to rise through his pain and attack the Skull. The Hate-Monger however has captured Namor’s mind and has him battle Cap. As the Prince of Atlantis is crushing his former ally, Cap reminds him of their teamwork during the war and how Bucky and many others gave their lives to defeat the Nazis; would Namor make their sacrifice meaningless? As Namor collapses to the deck, Cap makes a similar speech to the Red Skull’s mind slaves, reminding them of the importance of diversity to the American ideal. Above, the Red Skull plugs the Hate-Monger into the psychic system, ready to link him with everyone wearing the special headphones—but Cap strikes first: the people unleash a wave of righteous energy, causing the Hate-Monger to dissipate. Cap then clobbers the Red Skull.
Captain America then arrives at the funeral, bringing Rebecca Barnes Proctor, Bucky’s sister. After a moving eulogy, Cap unveils a statue of Bucky Barnes, the model of a hero. Rebecca is presented with the flag that draped his coffin.
