Story Name:

Blind Alley

Synopsis

Daredevil #163 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 3.5 stars
Blind attorney Matt Murdock is at a Manhattan fundraiser when his super-sensitive hearing detects the Hulk's heartbeat nearby. Without waiting to change into his Daredevil costume, Matt swings over to the alley where the Green Giant is on a rampage and tries to calm him down (Matt Murdock defended the Hulk in court in WITH 152-153, remember?). Mention of Bruce Banner causes the Hulk to fly into a rage. But Matt manages to persuade Jade Jaws to rest, which causes him to revert to his alter ego.

The next morning, Matt provides Bruce with food, clothing and money for his journey west; Bruce thanks him and leaves. On the subway, however, a confrontation with an obnoxious fellow passenger leads to a shoving match and Bruce turns into the Hulk and smashes through the ceiling to the street. Again Matt Murdock hears the Hulk's rampaging search for his "enemy" Bruce Banner; slips into his Daredevil gear to confront the Hulk.

The Hulk is shot by a police officer and sent into a violent rage. Daredevil tries to stop the Green Giant. But his super-keen senses and agility are no match for his foes superhuman strength. Before he collapses from his injuries, the Man Without Fear begs the Hulk to trust him. Hulk, realizing he's injured a friend, leaps off in guilt and despair. Daredevil is rushed to the hospital.

Review / Commentaries

Daredevil #163 Review by (December 26, 2024)
First appearance of the Hulk in a Daredevil comic. Plus, Daily Bugle reporter Ben Urich discovers that Daredevil is Matt Murdock. Other inkers: Klaus Janson.

Additional Review and Comments by Anthony Silvestro:

Review: Daredevil encounters the Hulk, for a very mismatched fight! After helping out Bruce Banner, Matt has to contend with the Hulk after things don’t go Banner’s way (cause they never do). Every other hero seems to coincidentally be out of town, necessitating Daredevil to have to be the one to face the Hulk. He’s obviously outmatched, but refuses to give in or run away, really living up to his nickname as he fights a losing battle. The issue is a little reminiscent of Daredevil’s famous fight with Namor from all the way back in Daredevil #7, refusing to give in against a much stronger opponent, though this issue is much less iconic. The most significant development is actually Ben Urich getting the last piece of the puzzle to figure out Daredevil’s identity (after Heather stupidly says “Matt” while she sees Daredevil fighting the Hulk), which directly sets up another famous story next issue.

Comments: Issue contains a couple tiny cameos, notably J. Jonah Jameson and Tony Stark.
