Synopsis

Thor (2020 series) #9 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Back when Odin wanted Thor to learn humility he tethered him to Dr. Donald Blake who could turn into Thor when needed. But where does Don Blake reside when he isn’t Thor? In a fantasy simulation of a small town in America hidden deep within the World Tree where he walks the streets and greets his neighbors but never notices that his life isn’t real….

In his throne room, All-Father Thor reveals to Loki that he is planning to bring back Don Blake so he can have a place to rest when the duties of being king rest heavily on him. Loki knows he’s lying, that Thor wants to enter the Eldersleep where he can commune with the spirits of the old dead kings to solve the riddle of why anyone can pick up Mjolnir now, including Loki. But when Thor is in the Eldersleep, Don Blake will be in the real world and Thor wants Loki to protect him during that time. So, Thor thumps his hammer on the ground and is transported among the elder kings, who react to him guiltily, as though they know what is going to happen next and couldn’t prevent it. Thor drops into the fantasy town where Don Blake dwells, to find it a ruin with all the people dead, the corpse of a dragon lying over it all—Don woke up and realized he had been imprisoned here by Thor and went insane, calling for his alter ego…

…and the mad killer Blake is in Asgard, bearded and disheveled; he attacks Loki, stabbing him in the neck and breaking his arm. Blake announces that never again will he be a god, breaking his mighty cane over his knee….

Review / Commentaries

Thor (2020 series) #9 Review by (November 4, 2020)
Review: So here’s the latest writer looking for something to do with Dr. Don Blake, a character who was introduced in Thor’s comics only a few pages earlier than Thor himself (JOURNEY INTO MYSTERY #83) and was a central part of the book for the two decades or so. In the past two decades or so, various writers have tried doing something or other with Don Blake and now it’s Donny Cates’ turn. His idea is to make Don into a psychopathic killer as everything has to be dark and gritty. We’ll see where this goes and I’m hoping this isn’t one of those stories where the hero and his alter ego fight and learn to deal with each other and are united by hugging; SUPERMAN III did that and we all remember how that turned out.

Comments: Don Blake was Thor’s alter ego from the beginning of his Marvel comics history; the two personalities were separated and Blake vanished in THOR #338. The question of whether Blake was a real person or an imaginary construct to house Thor has gone back and forth quite a bit over the years and Don Blake has resurfaced from time to time in the post-Ragnarök (the one in THOR 1998 series #80-85) but never for long.
