Totally Awesome Hulk #21 Review by (May 18, 2020)

Review: The first third of the issue is scary Weapon X stuff, including the method of indoctrination for volunteers. The other two-thirds is the team bickering over how they are going to handle their assault on the enemy base. Simple and to the point. The first part is scary (and gruesome with what is happening to H-Alpha) while the planning meeting is quite amusing with the others discussing Alpha Male behavior while Hulk and Sabretooth fight. And Amadeus carries the day with his moral stance. Or at least seems to.

Comments: Cover and title page call this W.M.D. part 3 but it’s really part 4. H-Alpha will become Weapon H for a series of his own.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Totally Awesome Hulk #21 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Story continues from WEAPON X #5.

Agent Carla arrives at the Weapon X facility with new recruit Bobby Andrews, escorting him through the building until they reach the Black Level. There, Bobby is strapped to a chair and forced to watch a film describing mutants as evil with Hulk the evilest of all, having killed Bobby’s brother Dave and now Bobby has to step up and be the new hero. After this Rev. William Stryker appears to him and Bobby is hurried into the test, dubbed H-Beta. Doctor Alba is running another experiment with H-Alpha, who has not been indoctrinated by Rev. Stryker, compared by Alba to Wolverine with his discipline and control….

Aboard the Olympus Group Transport near Serenity Hills, Texas, Amadeus Cho shows the team the layout of the town and the central building, Weapon X headquarters, warning them that they have only a limited time to stop production on the killer cyborgs or they will be overwhelmed. When the rest of the group suggests just bombing the whole place from the sky, Amadeus balks at the idea of killing innocent people along with the baddies, a consideration the others don’t care about. Amadeus reminds them they are going to save Bobby Andrews, a dumb kid who has made a lot of bad choices but he doesn’t deserve what’s happening to him. Domino suggests just bombing the lowest level but Warpath points out that would give their enemies time to escape. Amadeus snatches the suitcase bomb from the table and Sabretooth attacks him; Amadeus turns into Hulk and gives him a sound thrashing. Creed pushes Hulk out of the doorway and triggers the bomb in Hulk’s hand. An enraged Hulk returns to beat him into a pulp. Seeing Hulk unleash all his passion and power assures the others that he will be all right on the mission and they agree to do it his way. Domino asks Hulk for assurance that any loot she finds she can keep….

That night, a pizza delivery van pulls up to the front gate, carrying a team of heroes….

Old Man Logan and Lady Deathstrike are in the issue too but I couldn’t fit them into the synopsis.

Story continues in WEAPON X #6.
