Totally Awesome Hulk #13 Review by (January 21, 2020)

Review: Just like on TV, comic books have special guest appearances by real life celebrities as themselves, featuring an awkwardly contrived pretext for a celebrity guest to show up, a sudden partnership between the guest and the regulars for whatever contrived problem comes up, and the guest displaying his specialty toward a contrived resolution for a contrived problem. This issue hits all the boxes but also avoids the main pitfall of a TV appearance: the celebrity guest, usually from sports, doesn’t have to know how to act, it’s the writer and the artist who get to make the guest look like he’s comfortable in this medium. And so it goes. Jeremy Lin is cute fanboying over Amadeus and Amadeus is cute fanboying over Jeremy Lin. Fun issue with some underutilized minor guest stars and a climactic battle with a robot dragon. And there’s more in the next issue!

Comments: Part one of two parts. Jeremy Lin is a real person, basketball player for the Brooklyn Nets. Arch-E-5912 first appeared in INCREDIBLE HULK (1999 series) #93 during the PLANET HULK storyline and became the pilot of the Warbound in the WORLD WAR HULK event. Gah-Ran of Breakworld previously appeared in STORM (2014 series) #5 and 8; this is his last appearance to date. Colors by Jay David Ramos and Dono Sanchez Almara.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Totally Awesome Hulk #13 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Still in Austin, Texas (see last issue), Amadeus Cho is walking past a playground when a bunch of teens recognize him and invite him to join their pickup basketball game. Declining to turn into Hulk, he demonstrates his grasp of mathematics by sinking the ball from across the court. Then basketball star Jeremy Lin, in Austin for a charity event, shows up to see Amadeus and the two start playing one-on-one until the police arrive to clear up the commotion. Amadeus invite Jeremy to chill at the Olympus Group Secret HQ where they eat and play video games and Amadeus tries to contact Maddy Cho to brag but she isn’t speaking to him (also since last issue)….

The next day, Amadeus joins Jeremy for his charity basketball game to benefit E.R.F.E.I. (Equal Rights for Every Intelligence), each leading a team of aliens and AIs, with Amadeus hulking out to level the playing field. The game gets started and Hulk finds himself taking things a bit too seriously—until a giant red robot dragon tears open the roof. Hulk snaps into action fighting the monster while Maddy contacts him, telling him to stand down. Hulk refuses, thinking he knows best but when the red dragon is defeated, he looks up to see a silver robot dragon carrying off teammate Arch-E-5912 with Jeremy Lin hanging on for dear life….
