Totally Awesome Hulk #12 Review by (January 14, 2020)

Review: Satisfying wrap-up to the story arc, though not exactly a happy ending for Amadeus who is told he’s a jerk in plain language by his sister. But then he does get some closure with Clint Barton in the end. And Christian Sung the monster was fairly interesting and is welcome back when some writer devises an interesting reason for him to return. Meanwhile, Black Panther is the real hero, promising to rescue the baby and then doing exactly that.

Comments: CIVIL WAR II tie-in. Issues #9-12 take place between CIVIL WAR II #4-5.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Totally Awesome Hulk #12 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Prologue has Bruce Banner advising Amadeus Cho that he will make a good Hulk, noting that while Bruce’s sin is anger, Amadeus is motivated by pride….

In Austin, Maddy Cho is enraged that Amadeus just made their monstrous foe stronger. Black Panther and Jake Oh arrive and plan to capture Hulk and send him to the Negative Zone. Instead, Maddy convinces them that the important matter is rescuing the lady’s baby from the monster. Panther promises the woman he will bring back her son. The team follows the monster’s tracks and discovers he has transformed back into his human shape to slip into a crack in the sidewalk, one wide enough only for Amadeus and Maddy to enter. T’Challa supplies them with tracking devices and they descend into the sewers. Amadeus confronts the bad guy (name revealed to be Christian Sung) who enjoys the strong emotions displayed by Amadeus when he threatens to drop the baby off a precipice. Sung intends to kill as many people as possible while feeding on Amadeus’ fear and panic. Then he drops the baby but Panther is on the scene to catch him. Amadeus and Sung both transform into their monstrous alter egos and Hulk calls out to Jake Oh to send them both to the Negative Zone. Maddy overrides the system and faces the monster herself. She lures it away from Hulk and then gives the order to transport the monster to the Neg Zone. Maddy then announces that she’s leaving her brother to be Hulk on his own since he never listens and he never learns; despite his pronouncements he always does what he feels like. Returning to the surface, Hulk is hailed as a hero by neighbors….

One week later, Hulk arrives at a diner in Topeka, Kansas. Clint (Hawkeye) Barton is sitting there. Neither he nor Hulk is sure what Hulk wants but, in the end, he turns back into Amadeus and says “I just want my friend back.” The two grieve together….
