Synopsis

Totally Awesome Hulk #9 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4.5 stars

In the aftermath of Hawkeye’s killing Bruce Banner and his subsequent trial and acquittal, Amadeus Cho is in a massive depression, knowing that he had cured Bruce of being the Hulk. Sister Maddy Cho tries to convince him that it wasn’t his fault but Amadeus blames the heroes. He answers the door to an army of SHIELD Agents, led by Captain Marvel, making sure that Amadeus is “all right” (i.e. posing no danger). He points out that with all their sensors on him, she should know that his condition is stable, even if Agent Jake Oh is stressing out. Amadeus explains that he knows in his head that the Avengers and other good guys weren’t responsible but he still feels it in his heart. He understands their concern that he might do something dangerous but he just wants to be left alone to mourn. Carol accepts this but as she turns to go, Amadeus stops her to ask, “If I were to go crazy, what makes you think you could stop me?” And there’s that doubt again….

Later, the SHIELD Helicarrier picks up Hulk jumping through the Appalachian Mountains in West Virginia; Captain Marvel is alerted and she sends a warning to Hawkeye in his refuge in the Poconos. They observe as Hulk tears through a mining site, spelling out “Made you look” in large letters. He then resumes his Amadeus form and Carol thinks he’ll be fine. Then Black Panther announces he’ll take it from there….

Review / Commentaries

Totally Awesome Hulk #9 Review by (December 17, 2019)

Review: In view of the tragedy of Bruce Banner’s death, the issue, like its characters takes on a more somber tone, reflected in Mike Del Mundo’s solid yet dreamlike painted art, more realistic than his subsequent Thor work. But Amadeus is still Amadeus: after doing everything he can to convince Captain Marvel and SHIELD that he means no harm, he can’t help but sow the seeds of doubt, letting them know he is still in control. And he deliberately sets them off with his snarky message carved into a mountain. So that T’Challa isn’t satisfied and needs to intervene, Amadeus again going too far out of pride. Very nice issue.

Comments: CIVIL WAR II tie-in. Issues #9-12 follow THE FALLEN one-shot and take place between CIVIL WAR II #4-5. SHIELD Agent Jake Oh was introduced in AGENTS OF ATLAS #1 and was a regular character in WAR MACHINE (2009 series); he will show up in several upcoming issues.
