Totally Awesome Hulk #14 Review by (February 20, 2020)

Review: A pretty cool wrap-up to the two-parter with not one, but two basketball guest stars. Plus, a giant metal octopus as the form of the villain Quasi/mo/do (who doesn’t get to make a speech this time) and the idea of taking him down in a basketball game (don’t pretend you were surprised, we all saw it coming since Jeremy Lin showed his face on issue #13’s cover) was quite fun. But Amadeus and Maddy are going to quarrel for a few more issues and the problem is, she’s right, he is a jerk who never listens. Well, there’s his character arc, will he ever learn?  Probably not, since that would leave him less than totally awesome.

Comments: Part two of two parts. Amadeus has been Director of Olympus Group since the death of Hercules in HERCULES: FALL OF AN AVENGER #1. Quasi/mo/do first appeared as Quasimodo, a sentient computer in FANTASTIC FOUR ANNUAL #4 (1966); after the FF he battled Silver Surfer, X-Men, Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell), Spider-Man, Nova, Iron Man, the Defenders, and of course the original Hulk.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Totally Awesome Hulk #14 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

A giant silver robot dragon is carrying off Arch-E-5912 with Jeremy Lin hanging on for dear life. Hulk leaps through the air to the rescue, seizes Jeremy and they start to plummet, teleporting to the ground at the last minute. Hulk recognizes the dragon’s code as having been stolen by a hacker from a videogame he had created. Hulk tries to scramble the jets of the Olympus Group but his sister Maddy Cho arrives via aircraft to remind him he is no longer the Director of Olympus Command, she is. She tells Jeremy that she has severed ties with Amadeus and shoots her brother with a Gamma-inhibitor, changing him back to normal before she heads out after the baddies. Amadeus and Jeremy follow in the latter’s car and on the road they are attacked by a cobbled together robot wanting to assimilate their car; Amadeus blasts it and learns it is working for Quasi/mo/do (the former Quasimodo); Amadeus uses the damaged robot to convert Jeremy’s auto into a flying car and they continue on the trail….

They arrive at a robotics plant where Quasi/mo/do has assimilated the tech to form a giant mechanical octopus; Maddy fires Kegger (their drone) at the monster but Amadeus Cho Hulks out and rescues Kegger, learning too late that it contained code Maddy had written to shut down Quasi/mo/do. The octopus teleports away and the group (including Arch-E-5912) forms their strategy: they put find a vulnerable spot on the monster to insert Kegger for the code to work. When they catch up with Quasi/mo/do, Jeremy calls the shots as they fan out like a basketball team, passing Kegger back and forth like a ball as Quasi/mo/do creates defenders to block them. The action moves back and forth a bit before Jeremy passes Kegger to Arch-E-5912 who dunks it in the slot and the whole metal mess falls apart, freeing the assimilated robots. Jeremy’s pal Brook Lopez shows up, a little to late for the action, and joins in the clean-up. Hulk approaches Maddy who shuts herself up in her aircraft and takes off; he goes back to picking up junk….
