All-New Invaders #4 cover

Story Name:

Gods and Soldiers, Part Four

Synopsis

All-New Invaders #4 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Flashback to WW2: the Invaders (including Toro, Spitfire, and Union Jack) are captured at the seaside by a cadre of Axis baddies. The heroes are still confident that Namor will rescue them; the villains sneer at the thought—then Subby arrives on a wave carrying whales and other giant sea creatures….

Now: the Invaders are prisoners of the Kree, captured with the aid of the enthralled Ikaris. Tanalth explains that soon her Pursuers will locate more Eternals and the gods of other worlds to be forced to do the Kree’s bidding by means of the Gods’ Whisper. The Supreme Intelligence reveals his plans for the heroes: Captain America and the Human Torch will be dissected to discover the secrets of the Super-Soldier Serum and android technology while Aarkus is now in a secure place awaiting further research. Winter Soldier rebels against his captivity and tries to fight his way out—he is shot and killed by the guards. As a reward for his troops, Supreme Intelligence arranges for them to watch a fight between the three remaining Invaders (Cap, Torch, and Subby) against the god Ikaris. The battle is intense and spectacular—and serves its purpose of distracting the Kree from Bucky as their capture and his "death" were part of the plan all along. And just as a guard notices that Bucky’s body is gone, he is freeing Aarkus from the lab where he is prisoner….

Review / Commentaries

All-New Invaders #4 Review by (June 6, 2014)
Review: The fight with Ikaris takes up the bulk of the issue and shame on you if you didn’t know this was all part of the plan. Again, it’s cool to see the good guys totally in control of a hopeless situation—we almost feel sorry for the Kree (but never for Subby). And that splash page in the prologue is truly epic (too bad the heroes AND the villains would be destroyed by the attack). The plot seems to be moving too quickly and it will all wrap up next issue, leading to the issue #6 tie-in to ORIGINAL SIN.

Comments: Finally, an inker is credited for the issue: Steve Pugh, the penciler. WW2-era villains seen include Master Man, Woman Warrior, U-Man, Agent Axis, Scarlet Scarab, Lady Lotus, and Teutonic Knight. Cap mentions the Avengers fighting alongside the Kree in the Battle of the Corridor; this took place in the INFINITY event in 2013.
