Story Name:

Heart of the Monster, Part 1

Synopsis

Incredible Hulks #630 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 5 stars

Back in Gammaworld, New Mexico, Amadeus Cho fills in She-Hulk and A-Bomb on what happened between Bruce and Betty in Rome (last issue). And Bruce Banner, who insists he is over Betty, turns into the Hulk and smashes up some huge equipment, changes back to Banner and waits for it to repair itself, then Hulks out and smashes it all again. Repeatedly. For 94 hours....

Three miles under Las Vegas, Tyrannus shows Red She-Hulk around his kingdom. He offers her his greatest secret treasure: the Fountain of Youth—but they are interrupted by the arrival of AIM troops led by Monica Rappaccini. They take out all of the Subterraneans, tranquilize Red and paralyze Tyrannus. MR plans to transform the Fountain of Youth into a wishing well; Red wakes up too early and seizes MR, promising to make the AIM scientist wish she'd never been born.... Moments later Rappaccini bursts from a Vegas fountain, summoning an evac unit to take her away. The crowd on the Strip applauds this “show”....

Rappaccini, her hair turned white, makes it to Gammaworld where she meets Hulk and explains to Bruce the danger Betty is in. So Bruce and his team (Jen, Rick, and Amadaeus Cho) hop on their aircraft and head for Vegas, with Amadeus explaining how wishes work in pop culture i.e. always with unintended consequences. Bruce warns them all to just keep their mouths shut...then a giant aquatic monster with long pointy teeth bursts up through the fountain and bites their craft, pulling it underground. As Hulk fights the sea monster, Amadeus unwittingly wishes for more help. His wish is answered: five supervillains appear: Bi-Beast, Wendigo, ArmChedon, Umar, and Fin Fang Foom....

Review / Commentaries

Incredible Hulks #630 Review by (August 21, 2018)

Review: Big, exciting, and thrilling new story arc may be Greg Pak's best. At least I mightily enjoyed it. The interplay among the villains, Amadeus' attempts to explain the secret workings of wishes, and the Pelletier/Miki art team brings it all to terrifying life.

Comments: A.I.M. leader Monica Rappaccini was introduced in AMAZING FANTASY #7 (2005) and has mainly appeared in Avengers titles. Amadeus recommends “The Monkey's Paw” by W.W. Jacobs and Stephen King's Pet Semetary for an explanation of how wishes can be granted in the most horrifying ways.
