Back in New York after their adventure against the Red Skull, Captain America and the Falcon bid a fond farewell to one another. Cap wants to pick up the threads of his tangled life once more so he heads to SHIELD headquarters to find Sharon Carter. On arrival, Nick Fury tells him that Sharon is away on a mission and invites him to get some rest in their new slumber chair. What Fury doesn't tell him is that a posthypnotic suggestion is being planted in Cap to take up a certain mission for them.
When Cap goes home, he is drawn to a newspaper ad seeking a phys ed teacher at Manning College and he decides to apply for the job. Arriving at the campus, Steve Rogers sees a protest rally in progress and comes to the aid of a professor being harassed by students. Cap declines to fight but manages to distract the radicals from the professor who introduces himself to Steve as Paul Fosgrave, the noted mathematician. Interviewing with the dean, Steve is hired and informed about the campus unrest: it seems a respected student leader, Mart Baker, has suddenly turned rabble rouser for inexplicable reasons and now he is outside, trying to incite a violent rally. When students start brawling, Steve switches to his Captain America outfit and tries to calm the rioters.
The entire scene is being watched on a remote televiewer by MODOK whose agents have instigated the uprising as a cover for kidnapping Prof. Fosgrave in order to seize his secret atomic equations. The A.I.M. agents capture Fosgrave and Mart is shocked to see they have guns. Cap recognizes the weapons as A.I.M. technology and heads to the rescue, accompanied by Mart Baker. Cap shoots down the enemy copter with their own weapon and saves the professor.
Without MODOK’s influence, the campus unrest is calmed and Cap returns to SHIELD HQ. When Fury asks why he didn't stay on as athletic instructor, Cap responds that the job was too tough for an old codger like him.
