Immortal Hulk #36 Review by (August 12, 2020)

Review: Another insane issue with the usual quota of body horror (I hope Joe Bennett doesn’t have nightmares like this). Gamma Flight arrives impossibly quickly to stir up more apocalyptic trouble at the instigation of the Leader, leading to a new version of Crusher Creel, the gamma monster. And as if that weren’t scary enough, we hearken back to the labs so that the long-forgotten test tube subject Del Frye can reintroduce himself and insert himself into the plot in the most gruesome way possible.

Comments: Del Frye’s story was told in issues #2 and 6 of this comic, available not far away on this site. Issue includes a tribute to the late Denny O’Neil (1939-2020).

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Immortal Hulk #36 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

On a publicity visit to Georgeville, Iowa, Hulk has exploded, killing many and twisting Rick Jones (he’s actually the Leader in disguise) into an elongated warped thing. Hulk is shocked and cries from guilt. The radiation level is too high for Doc Samson and Charlene McGowan to translocate him back to Shadow Base. Jackie McGee tries to comfort him but Gamma Flight (Puck, Titania, Absorbing Man) arrives to battle Hulk. Hulk pleads with them to leave him alone, as does Jackie but Leader “stirs the pot” by having Titania knock Jackie down while trying to chase her away. Hulk sees this and goes berserk, ripping off Creel’s arm and smashing him into the ground and then severely beating Titania. Creel sees his woman in danger and absorbs gamma radiation to become a giant glowing monster. The Leader approves….

McGowan sends Doc Samson to the lab to find the thumb drive with all the translocator and he sees the distorted body of gamma victim Del Frye in a glass tube where the scientists are working on a cure. Then one of the scientists melts before their eyes and Frye reaches out of the tube to greet Samson….
