Hulk is in the holding facility with special manacles that will shrink if he turns back into Bruce Banner. His captor is Henry Peter Gyrich, now in charge of Alpha Flight, which includes Gamma Flight. Inside Hulk’s head, Savage Hulk and Joe Fixit are arguing—then Joe catches on that Gyrich hasn’t been keeping up with developments. Hulk then swells and bursts open disgorging Joe Fixit who overcomes the guard and Gyrich and escapes….

Meanwhile, the Gamma Flight group is hurrying toward the cells as Doc Samson explains that he came back from the Below-Place via Walt’s green door when they encounter Joe Fixit. Joe uses the guard’s gun to blow a hole in the station window, getting sucked out to fall to Earth. As they try to plot his trajectory, Joe becomes the Hulk, the skinny-looking one. He splashes down in the river near Coney Island where he finds the Thing waiting for him. “I know you know what time it is.”

Review / Commentaries

Immortal Hulk (2018 series) #40 Review by (November 18, 2020)

Review: This issue is a lot easier to follow with it all taking place on the outside of Hulk’s mind. Henry Peter Gyrich is back, a longtime thorn in various heroes’ sides as the usual government liaison brought in when the government wants to be utterly obnoxious. And the “surprise” appearance of the ever-lovin’ blue-eyed Thing gives some promise to the next issue—though I can’t imagine what kind of twist Ewing and Bennett will put on it. More to come.

Comments: The inkers are Ruy Jose and Belardino Brabo; the colors are by Paul Mounts and Matt Milla.
