Totally Awesome Hulk #19 Review by (April 13, 2020)

Review: Very enjoyable set-up to an offbeat crossover: Hulk and X-Men. The vain and quippy Amadeus makes a good foil for the grim Logan and grimmer Sabretooth, the space battle was quite epic, and Amadeus’ detective work was thrilling. With an “uh-oh” ending that bodes ill for our (anti-)heroes. Can’t wait for the next installment.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Totally Awesome Hulk #19 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Responding to a distress call, Amadeus Cho, the Totally Awesome Hulk is in space, rescuing a Russian space shuttle; he delights in being the only person who can survive in space without a protective suit, just an oxygen mask and a rocket pack—until he spots two more humans with no protection approaching him. They fire missiles out of the hands, striking Hulk and destroying his mask and jet pack. They reveal themselves to be killer cyborgs with huge adamantium claws, slashing at him. [This battle is being monitored by the Weapon X project back on Earth.] Searching for a weapon, Hulk uses his frozen blood drops, hurling them like bullets at his foes. The damaged cyborg self-destructs, knocking Hulk out. The second one seizes him but he was only faking and he rips the cyborg apart and begins plummeting to Earth, clutching the head and chest of the second cyborg….

Near Isla Cedros in Baja California, Old Man Logan, Sabretooth, and Domino are searching for clues to the cyborgs that had attacked them (WEAPON X #3) when Hulk approaches in his airship and invites them aboard. He explains that his examination of the partial cyborg he has showed traces of their DNA so he came looking for them. He also knows that the cyborgs are based on Lady Deathstrike as their foundation with Warpath’s DNA giving them flight. They try interrogating the cyborg but it turns out to be only a machine with pre-programmed answers. Studying its data bank shows them its destination so they head there, with Amadeus confident of their chances—until Logan points out that they may have a sample of his blood. And we see they do: a portion of the ruined cyborg reformed itself into an insectoid shape, harvested some of his blood drops and returned to its home….

Story continues in WEAPON X #4.
