Revelations: Finale

Synopsis

Thor (2020 series) #17 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Thor and Odin meet with Freyja and Angela in the forests of Vanaheim but first they must battle a horde of koragants from Muspelheim, brought over during the War of the Realms. Freyja excuses herself and returns as God of the Hunt, riding a giant black cat with mounted machine guns, exterminating the monsters. Odin and Freyja continue one of their ongoing arguments but Angela shuts them up, announcing that she is the one who called this meeting. She tells Thor that the Realms know that Thor’s reign as king has been a disaster and she wants Thor and Odin to reconcile. If not, she will claim the right of firstborn to take the throne of Asgard herself, though she doesn’t want it. Freyja asks Angela to take Odin home so she can speak to Thor. Since Odin is spoiling for a fight, Angela takes him to an alien gladiator arena where he faces a giant insectoid monster. Freyja explains that after recent revelations (like the Phoenix being Thor’s mother), she doesn’t know how she fits in his life anymore. Though she didn’t bear him, she raised him thus she is his mother. Thor biggest worry is that he will be the last king of Asgard, as he doesn’t wish to have an heir to the cursed throne; Mom assures him that everything will work out all right. Then Thor gets a call from Captain America at Avengers Mountain telling him that Mjolnir is missing….

Review / Commentaries

Thor (2020 series) #17 Review by (September 29, 2021)

Review: Freyja is the God of the Hunt? Well, that came out of nowhere. And not “Goddess”? Huh. Though the revelation does get some action into an issue that is otherwise all talk among the feuding family. Thor is still brooding, Freyja is being all nurturing and supportive, Odin is grumpy, and Angela is Angela i.e. nasty. The issue isn’t all that interesting but it’s well done, nonetheless.

Comments: A koragant was seen at the end of the last issue. Angela quotes the Bible: “A house divided cannot stand.” (Matthew 12:25, condensing it a bit); Abraham Lincoln referenced the same verse in his famous speech during his debates with Stephen Douglas (1858). The revelation of the Phoenix as Thor’s mother came in AVENGERS (2018) #42. The final panel features cameos by Iron Man, Captain Marvel, Black Panther, She-Hulk, Blade, and Ghost Rider.
