Tyrannus has united with the Flame of Life (last issue) and attacks the Hulk. Hulk tears the mechanic tower that holds Tyrannus/the Flame, causing them to escape into the sky. A Celestial called Gammenon, walking through the Andes, watches in silence.

Victorious, Hulk turns his attention to the Goldbug, who used him earlier to feed his space ship (Hulk #239). Accidentally, Hulk activates a trap that seals both in a bubble. Hulk recalls Des (Tyrannus as an old man) showed him an image of Jarella. Suddenly, they are tele transported to New York City, appearing in the sewers.

An immense earthquake buries the city of El Dorado. Their people, trapped in the caverns, will start anew, without keepers of the Flame and with a new leader, the apprentice of Turak.

The Goldbug escapes from the Hulk and into the streets, where he stumbles upon Power Man and Iron Fist. They take him to the police for past crimes. Hulk gets out of the sewers and leaps away.

Meanwhile, Fred Sloan, who is writing a book on the Hulk, interviews Betty Ross. Trish Starr is with them. Glenn Talbot becomes the Gamma Base new commander and wants to end the Hulk. And SHIELD agent Clay Quartermain leaves the base on another mission.

Also in this story, in flashbacks: the Defenders.
