Synopsis

Avengers #1 synopsis by Kevin Hollander
Rating: 1 stars
Loki materializes in the Heroes Reborn universe, drawn to it for largely unspecified reasons. His mind is clouded, disconnected from the majority of his memories, save one: his hatred for his step-brother Thor. Looking around he realizes there is no Rainbow Bridge and therefore no Asgard. Although initially outraged, he realizes that without an Asgard, there is no Odin. With no Odin to interfere, he may finally be able to gain revenge upon his hated adversary.

While seeking out Thor, Loki arrives in Norway and finds a S.H.I.E.L.D. expedition led by archeologist Dr. Donald Blake. Their original objective was to find a Norse war hammer, but instead they find someone frozen in amber that may be the Norse god Thor. While the workers are away, Loki tries to kill Thor, but finds his magic will not work. He reasons that Thor is under a protective spell. He overhears Blake contacting the Avengers for assistance. Loki doesn't remember the Avengers, but decides to use them to help him kill Thor.

Loki is then drawn to a former industrial complex turned named Avengers' Island. This facility will house America's premiere team of super heroes. Loki finds the private quarters of the Scarlet Witch, conversing with Agatha Harkness. She has been selected from the ranks of S.H.I.E.L.D. to join the Avengers. Although Wanda wants to return to Salem, Agatha insists she remain in New York to experience the real world and help her gain control over her powers.

Loki continues to inspect the compound and observes the remaining team members: Swordsman, Hawkeye, Hellcat, Vision, Captain America, Janet Van Dyne, and Hank Pym. Pym is working in his lab with his A.I. assistant Ultron, who replaced Vision when he decided to become an Avenger.

A priority alarm activates, calling all Avengers to the meeting room. Nick Fury then sends them to Norway to assist Blake. When they arrive, Blake shows them to the chamber where they combine their powers to free Thor from his prison. Thor emerges in a confused state. Loki uses this to his advantage and convinces Thor to help him destroy the Avengers - the people who trapped him in the amber.

Eventually Thor recovers Mjolnir and remembers that the Avengers are not to blame for his imprisonment and attacks Loki. As Loki prepares to send Thor into limbo, the Scarlet Witch casts a spell that causes Loki's magic to backfire, pulling him into limbo instead.

When asked about how he was frozen in the amber, Thor can only remember the word "onslaught" and other vague images. Thor decides to join the Avengers - until he can find his missing Asgardian brethren.

In limbo, Loki meets up with the Enchantress. She offers a truce: by working together they can overpower Thor and his new teammates. All she wants in exchange is her daughter - the Scarlet Witch.

Review / Commentaries

Avengers #1 Review by (July 19, 2010)
Comments: Captain America joins the team after the events Captain America Vol. 2 #3. This disconnect does little more than confuse readers. The purpose should be to make the books new-reader friendly, but they chose to use a common character (Cap) and structured the books to be out of sync yet with each other. Skipping past this problem, the plot is reasonable, but characters are one-dimensional. The sequence in which the Avengers free Thor from the amber is laughable. The purpose was to showcase each character and their powers, but it was overblown. They put almost as much effort into freeing Thor as they did fighting him. One would wonder if this same group effort would be used to open a jar of pickles. They should have used the team/powers introduction during the battle with Loki.
