Story Name:

Hulk vs Banner! Chapter One: Island of 1000 Hulks

Synopsis

Incredible Hulk #4 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

As the Mad Squad's mission gets underway, Commander Amanda von Doom tells Hulk that they are going to assassinate Bruce Banner, good guy gone rogue, to prevent any future mayhem he might cause. Doom reveals that just that morning, Banner and his gamma-irradiated giant animals assaulted a US Air Force Base and carried off their supply of dangerously radioactive gamma isotopes. So Doom informs him that they must kill their quarry; Hulk, however, insists that he be the one to kill Banner....

They arrive at the island and are immediately attacked by giant green bat-men. Back at his lab, Banner injects himself with a gamma serum but it has no effect and he starts slapping himself, imagining he is being taunted by Betty, and finally smashes his face into a mirror—but no result. At the beach, Hulk singlehandedly takes down a squad of green tiger-men and leaps across the island, tearing open the front of the lab and demanding Banner come face him. Banner comes out and describes how he has been trying to get the Hulk back from within but he can't make it happen. Hulk sees that his next “experiment” involves detonating a gamma-bomb. Banner wonders why, since the Hulk has been removed from him, he still has all of his faculties—including the rage that he always thought was the Hulk. In the midst of the madman's animal protectors, Hulk picks up Banner by the neck; the latter tries to goad him into squeezing but Hulk can't do it—he is no longer the monster. But Banner is, so he fires a jolt from a special glove, sending Hulk across the island. Donning jet boots and picking up weapons, Banner heads out to finish off the Hulk....

Review / Commentaries

Incredible Hulk #4 Review by (October 29, 2018)

Review: A crazed Bruce Banner is a scary sight to behold, with the madman's fiery stare and sadistic grin that make him look like he's auditioning to play the Joker in an upcoming DC series. And Hulk turns out to be unable to kill his worst enemy, with unfortunate consequences. Jason Aaron takes us into the Hulk's head: “Imagine being chained your entire life. Imagine having the strength to break worlds, but not the power to control your own destiny. Imagine being told every day you've ever known that you're a burden, a mistake, an accident. A monster. Now imagine that one day you finally broke free of those chains. What would you do to stay unchained?” Kudos for an issue that has Banner scaring us and the Hulk eliciting our pity.

Comments: We get a glimpse of Trimpe Air Force Base. Inks are credited to Allen Martinez and Rick Ketcham; colors to Arif Prianto and Veronica Gandini.
