Captain America #20 Review by (January 5, 2018)

Comments: Cap story: Part one of three parts. Connie F refers to her father as “The Great Santini” from the classic 1979 film about a domineering military father; first mention of her brother about whom more would be heard soon. Fort Colan is a tribute to the great Marvel artist Gene. Nick Fury story: Part one of two.

Review: Cap story gets off to a good start with USAgent and his exploding shield and then moves into a nice romantic scene between Steve and Connie—and she is quite charming, a situation which would change the longer she is in the comic. Too bad because I like her. The Sharon interlude is quite funny and the art recalls Tim Sale for some reason. And the SHIELD rescue is actually exciting. Another cool Waid and Kubert issue, funny and cute and entertaining; let's hope Waid can recapture the feel on his 2017 run. The Sgt Fury tale is a marked contrast to the Cap story: the art is much more realistic and the grayscale coloring gives it a stark, intense look. The story is also nice, with Fury failing to see the heroism in the acts of a man he deems a traitor, learning only in the end how much he had misjudged him.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Captain America #20 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

A.I.M. agents raid Fort Colan in Colorado to seize nanomite bombs—not to worry, USAgent is on the scene to battle the baddies. A photon blast at his Vibranium shield causes it to shake and explode....

Steve Rogers goes to dinner at Connie Ferrari's apartment, accompanied by young Javier Ramirez, who absconds at the earliest opportunity. Steve asks about a young serviceman whose picture can be found around the apartment. Connie explains that it is her brother David, a sensitive boy forced into a military career by their domineering father and who died during a hazing. Steve shares (briefly) his troubles with Sharon and Connie suggests he go looking for her. Steve departs but looks back at her from the street and she knows he will come back to her....

Meanwhile, Sharon Carter is in Turkey, drinking away her troubles. An American hits on her, offering to help her forget her troubles—but then Sharon learns his name is Steve, and she punches his lights out....

At SHIELD headquarters, Captain America is talking to Dum Dum Dugan about his Sharon troubles when they are interrupted by an explosion. A training exercise for the mandroid armor has gone wrong and the armored suits are exploding. Cap rescues whoever he can but then learns that the power core is about to detonate as well—and there is one agent trapped inside. Cap dons a protective suit and heads to the rescue. His new energy shield will not respond the way the original one would, so he tosses it to Agent Murphy to protect himself while Cap leaps through the air and pulls the failsafe switch which shuts down the reactor. While they are trying to figure out what happened, Cap gets a call from Tony (Iron Man) Stark, telling him that he knows what is going on and that the entire country is sitting on a giant bomb....

2. “Sgt. Fury in Bloodline”

Writer: Bill Rosemann. Art: Vince Evans.

Synopsis: Sgt. Nick Fury and his Howling Commandos are prisoners of the Germans, having been overcome by a mysterious gas on the battlefield. Isolated, the men have no idea where they are and an American colonel, William Poprycz, is on the edge of madness. The Nazi commander enters—Baron Blood the vampire—and he offers Fury the chance to become a vampire and join the Third Reich's undead army....
