Synopsis

Captain America #28 synopsis by Peter Silvestro
Rating: 4 stars

Having crashed in the Savage Land, Sharon Carter awakens to find herself a prisoner of a masked native called Stox and his dinosaur/human henchmen....

Having run his recreated shield through an amazing array of tests, Captain America says there is only one test left—and Thor unleashes the power of Mjolnir on it, and it survives. Later, Cap confides to Thor his problems with women....

Steve Rogers stops by Connie Ferrari's office with flowers to atone for too many broken dates; she demands to be taken somewhere extravagant—but they are interrupted by Nick Fury. Fury is briefly bemused by the photo of Connie's brother, but Steve and Nick take off, the former promising to see Connie later at the restaurant. Fury tells Steve that they've heard from Sharon, stranded in Antarctica; since Sharon is not technically a member of SHIELD at this time, Fury can't send out a rescue team—so he's here to recruit Steve for a secret operation....

Interlude: A.I.M. scientists study their newest discovery, recovered by Agent Billups last issue: an earlier super-soldier test subject (soon to be called Protocide), suspended in a tank, and ready to be revived....

Captain America flies to Antarctica, locates Sharon's downed plane and then falls though into the Savage Land. Cap is attacked by a horde of dinosaur-men and a helmeted warrior arrives to help Cap drive them off. Cap assumes it is Ka-Zar but no, the new arrival is Ka-Zar's son Matthew Plunder, looking much more an adult than he should....

Review / Commentaries

Captain America #28 Review by (March 15, 2018)

Review: Another Savage Land tale? Well, this one features Captain America, not a frequent visitor, and surprise from the Ka-Zar family but more on that next issue. This bit is promising but the real highlight of the issue is...no, not Steve and Connie's strange romance...it's the appearance of Thor, unleashing the power of Mjolnir on Cap's shield and watching it bounce off. Meanwhile, the introduction of Protocide will fill the next several issues and he will become a major Cap villain—but only for a dozen issues in this series; we'll keep you posted.

Comments: Part one of four parts. First appearance of Protocide. Matthew Plunder was a regular in his father's 1997 series, though he was only a baby. Cap's last visit to the Savage Land was in AVENGERS #256-257. Additional inking by Joe Kubert.
