Totally Awesome Hulk #16 Review by (March 3, 2020)

Review: Another cool issue full of creative stuff with Amadeus being a jerk though not all of the others get a chance to shine. The baddies are bad and there’s the “let’s all work together” moral lesson which a comic doesn’t always need but makes the endeavor look like it’s educational and not just entertaining.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Totally Awesome Hulk #16 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

Prince Regent Phalkan of Seknarf Seven and his Imperial Guard have invaded New York to avenge his defeat by the Hulk (last issue), intending to conquer the human race for food. The heroes (Hulk, Silk, Ms. Marvel, Shang-Chi, Jake Oh, Jimmy Woo) immediately start fighting, backed by several police officers. Ordinary citizen Jeffrey Gunderblank panics, calling for the Avengers, and Jimmy tries to calm him down by pointing out the heroes on the ground. Hulk brings down the alien flagship after telling them to clear Herald Square. Amadeus sees this as everyone working together though Ms. Marvel refers to it as “everyone madly scrambling to cover for [Hulk’s] ill-advised, unilateral decisions.” Then the lighted spears planted around the square light up—and then a section of the streets is gone along with everyone in that area…

…and the section reappears in space near Seknarf Seven. Phalkan announces they are now a food colony and warns them that if they resist, their oxygen supply will be cut off. Pahlkan adds that they will return in six hours and expect three humans to be handed over for tonight’s feast. Jimmy Woo dubs the group the Protectors and vows to protect the earth people as do the police. Everyone works together to make a shelter, find food and water and Hulk recruits those with mechanical know-how to figure out how the lighted spears work to create gravity and atmosphere. Another colony floats into view and Seknarfians are seen rounding up those inhabitants for food; he tries to leap over there and hits a force field which not only knocks him back it depowers him. The Agents’ guns are also unusable. Shang-Chi, Silk, and Ms. Marvel still have their powers and so they will lead the charge, with the citizens ready to join the fight….
