Incredible Hulks #626 Review by (August 7, 2018)

Review: From the Savage Land to the Suave: a lot of James Bond references (starting with the cover) enliven this tale with the unlikeliest cool super-spy ever. The story has a totally different mood from previous storylines and is quite enjoyable—and no one has bugs crawling out of them. And Pandora's Box makes a nice McGuffin for a comic book story. And it gets better.

Comments: Part one of four parts. Title is a parody of the James Bond title THE SPY WHO LOVED ME; the subtitle references the quote “When in Rome, do as the Romans do” i.e. follow the local customs where you go. Amadeus quotes Pee-Wee Herman to mock Bruce. First appearance of Dr Sofia Di Cosimo, who will show up over the next several issues and, despite her “past” with Hercules, she has never appeared in one of Herc's comics.

Incredible Hulks #626 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

In a remote part of Georgia, Betty Ross Banner is found by soldiers evacuating the area because of the Hulk; she hulks out, becoming Red She-Hulk to toss around some military vehicles. She is approached by a man in Roman costume and at first mistakes him for Bruce. He isn't....

At the research facility in Gammaworld, New Mexico, Bruce Banner and Amadeus Cho are following Red on their monitors and realize that with her energy spikes, after three or four more transformations, she won't be able to change back. Bruce decides to track her down and warn her. After picking up some gadgets a tuxedo-clad Bruce Banner arrives at an art museum in Rome with Amadeus back home on the other end of a comm-link. There he finds Betty at a lavish party, looking quite beautiful. He sweeps her away from her admirers and tries to warn her about her transformations. She rebuffs him and goes off with her escort: Tyrannus, Lord of Subterranea. Bruce's jealousy causes him to turn into Hulk but Amadeus persuades him to leave before he can trigger a similar change in Betty. But when he sees Tyrannus carrying an apparently unconscious Betty he dashes back into the museum and rips open a vault where he thinks the villain has trapped her. Surprise: the Hulk was duped into opening the vault; Tyrannus takes what he came after and Betty, as Red She-Hulk, clobbers the big green guy and they depart. Amadeus asks museum director Dr Sofia Di Cosimo what was in the vault. She replies “Pandora's Box....”
