Totally Awesome Hulk #1 Review by (October 14, 2019)

Review: Well, the new Hulk gets off to a roaring start, establishing that he is smart strong, irresponsible, and easily distracted by the ladies. And that is a more entertaining Hulk than the brooding Banner and smashing Hulk usually is, though Mark Waid and Gerry Duggan have given Regular Hulk a more enjoyable makeover leading up to this. But we now have a nagging sister who wants him to be more responsible, a flying base of operations, a mission to capture monsters, and a villain who is a hot babe. Plus a sharp writer and a realistic art style that lends itself to comedy. This could get interesting.

Comments: Title is a pun on “Show time.” First appearance of Amadeus Cho as Hulk. First appearance of Lady Hellbender. “Seknarf” spelled backwards is “Frankes;” I can determine no significance to this fact.

Synopsis / Summary / Plot

Totally Awesome Hulk #1 Synopsis by Peter Silvestro

On Virginia Beach on the last day of summer, a monster resembling a two-headed turtle rises from the ocean sending the crowds into a panic. And the drone Kegger, actually channeling Maddy Cho) has to nag her brother Amadeus Cho into taking action. When Amadeus is done gorging himself on burgers he dashes to the beach, transforming into the Hulk en route. He punches out the monster then flirts with an attractive woman who is caring for a small child. He is thus distracted when the monster recovers and grabs him, pounding him into the sand like the (other) Hulk did to Loki. He manages to save the kid and the woman from the monster’s fiery breath and tosses a tank of propane into its mouth, all the while ignoring Maddy’s nagging and advice. The explosion knocks out the monster and Hulk is able to shrink it using a wrist device. He then turns his attention back to the lady but she points out that he is now naked and he leaps off in embarrassment and returns to the flying food truck that is his and Maddy’s rolling base. Maddy greets him with a punch in the face and complaints about his performance. She locks the tiny creature in a bottle while Amadeus dresses. They have been investigating monster sightings all over the world and capturing the beasts but Maddy is worried that Amadeus is unreliable like Bruce Banner. He becomes incensed (proving her point) but they are interrupted by the drone warning that he is starting to Hulk out….

Kenya, four months ago: Bruce Banner arrives at the site of the meltdown of a fusion reactor. Iron Man and Black Panther are on the scene and have given up trying to halt the disaster, instead concentrating on evacuating as many people as they can. Bruce thinks he can do better than that and transforms into the Hulk, leaping into action. He enters the reactor and absorbs the energy into himself and halting the meltdown but it’s different from the gamma radiation that created him and it starts to affect him….

Amadeus calms down and his gamma levels drop; he apologizes and Maddy expresses her concern for him. Amadeus takes a nap and has what would be a recurring dream: he is driving down a highway, feeling free because the Hulk is locked in the trunk….

Two days later in New Zealand, She-Hulk and Spider-Man (Miles Morales) are battling a pair of ogres called Gnasher and Gasher; Hulk arrives and teams with Shulkie to take down the monsters. He bickers with Maddy (via Kegger) about flirting with She-Hulk, who takes a disliking to him for his lack of responsibility. Then Hulk is clouted by a new arrival: Lady Hellbender, Monster Queen of Seknarf Nine. As she grinds his face under her boot, Amadeus sizes up this buxom gray-skinned barbarian woman and pronounces her fine, to Maddy’s dismay….
