Rating: 4 stars

In this first installment of the Countdown story, we find Mr. Fixit (aka the Hulk) beginning to revert back into Dr. Bruce Banner. The two personalities share a common goal: to rid themselves of the other. As morning breaks, Banner reminisces about becoming the Hulk and how the monster continues to haunt his existence.

Meanwhile, at the research facility where Bruce works, co-worker Phil Sterns is approached by a mysterious figure plotting against Banner. Later, Bruce and Phil discuss their plans to free Banner from the Hulk.

Suddenly, a skydiver is sighted above the facility. As the figure crashes into the building, it is revealed to be the Abomination. He has come to steal valuable toxic waste for his employer, and little stands in his way—until he spots Banner. Bruce tries to escape but is overcome by chest pains. Presented with the opportunity to battle his nemesis once again, Abomination gives chase. As he looms over the fallen Banner, Bruce gasps, “I’m having... a... heart attack...”

Not willing to be denied his chance at the Hulk, Abomination throws Banner into a Gamma Tester, triggering his transformation into the Hulk. For the first time, Abomination sees the Gray Hulk, Joe Fixit. The two begin fighting, with Abomination ranting about his disappointment in this incarnation of the Hulk. Fixit feels it too—he is weakened by a sickness Banner was experiencing. Knowing he should be unaffected by Banner’s illness, Hulk deduces he has been poisoned.

Abomination presses the attack, forcing Hulk to flee into a toxic waste containment area. As the villain threatens to break Hulk’s neck, the Gray Goliath hurls his misshapen opponent into one of the vats. Abomination, melting away, accuses Hulk of cheating. Fixit replies, “Nuts. Now I’ll never prosper.” He then collapses, clutching his chest.
